FOR THOSE WHO MAY RECEIVE The Newsletter on Thursday: Professor Alexander M. Yakovlev, one of the
framers of the new Russian constitution, will give a public lecture on Thursday evening, November 4, at 7:00 p.m.

REMINDER--COLLEGIAL SEMINAR will meet at noon today, November 5, in the Private Dining Room. The
presentation will be "Reconstructing the Latin American Left: Lessons from Northeastern Brazil" by Dr. William
Nylen, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science. The contemporary political Left has been set
adrift by the worldwide 'failure' of socialism. But the obvious and painful failure of capitalism to improve standards
of living in Latin America has given that region's Left an opportunity to reconstruct what socialism means, or could
mean. Dr. Nylen will discuss this topic as it relates to his Summer 1993 field research in Northeastern Brazil.
Focusing on Brazil's Workers' Party (whose candidate for next year's presidential elections is strongly favored to
win), the presentation describes what 'reconstructed socialism' looks like in two small Northeastern Brazilian
towns, and what it might look like in Brazil next year. Coffee and dessert provided by Dean Maris of the College

ESTATE PLANNING: Dr. Richard Copeland will be presenting a seminar on Guardianship/Medicare for Parents and
Nursing Homes this Friday, November 5, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m., Lynn Business Center, Room 100. If you haven't
already done so, please call the Personnel Office to reserve your place. Your spouse is welcome to attend also.
Please bring your own recorder if you want to tape the session.
RETIREMENT PLANNING: A TIAA/CREF Representative will be on campus Wednesday and Thursday, November
10 and 11, to conduct individual retirement planning sessions. The representative will help you identify retirement
goals and develop the strategies for achieving financial security at retirement. Your spouse is also welcome to join
you at this meeting. Please bring your last quarterly statement from TIAA/CREF and any summaries of other
financial assets. Appointments can be made by calling the Personnel Office at ext. 8710.
