The presentation at the Collegial Seminar today Friday. October 2 at noon in the Private Dining Room is
"Population Biology of the Pygmy Rattlesnake," by professors Terry Farrell and Peter May. The following is an
abstract of their presentation:
ABSTRACT: The biology of snakes is less well known than that of any other group of vertebrates because of
their generally secretive nature and cryptic appearance. This is particularly true of tropical and subtropical
species, as most extensive snake studies are performed at hibernation dens in the north where snakes can be
collected in large numbers in fall and spring. For the past ten months we have been studying, along with a team
of dedicated students, the population biology of an extraordinarily dense population of Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnakes
(Sistrurus miliarius barbouri), in an attempt to understand the basic parameters of population structure and
growth. We are interested in their activity and movement patterns, reproductive behaviors, survival and growth
rates, thermal relationships with the environment, as well as other aspects of their natural history. This seminar
will cover some of the techniques we use to study these amazing beasts and present an overview of what we
consider to be the significant questions about this species and the answers we have uncovered so far.

On Monday, October 5, the Political Science department will be hosting a Political Science Forum in rooms
204/205 of the Carlton Union Building. The time will be from 12:15-1:15 p.m. and guests are encouraged to
bring their own lunch. The guest speaker will be Dr. Tom Horton and the topic of discussion will be "Ross Perot:
Can a Texas Billionaire Save us?" All faculty members and students are welcome to attend.
