COLLEGIAL SEMINAR sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences will be at noon on
Monday, October 30, on the stage in Elizabeth Hall. Tables will be there for you to
sit at—to eat the bag lunch that you bring. The first part of the seminar will
include musical performances by pianist Michael Rickman, violinist Alvaro Gomez, and
the Stetson University Concert Choir conducted by Duncan Couch. These performances
will lead into the paper presented by Professor Bobby Adams, "Art Music is Losing Its
Audience: Does it Matter?" An abstract of the paper follows. Coffee will be

ABSTRACT
ART MUSIC IS LOSING ITS AUDIENCE: DOES IT MATTER?
"I often think . . .I'm going to be in the generation that sees this whole thing die,"
laments James Levine, music director of the Metropolitan Opera. This paper takes a
look at the downward trend in support for the arts and specifically art music.
Evidence shows that art music is losing its audience, not only in our state and nation
but in our own community as well. What are the reasons for the decline and does it
matter?
The seminar grows out of the belief that the decline in art music is an educational
problem and that if art, and in this case art music, is important in the world, then
it must certainly be important here at Stetson. The School of Music recognizes its
responsibility to this community for cultural leadership and takes this first step in
a new effort to do something about the problem.
SUMMER GRANT APPLICATIONS. Please note that the deadline for submission of summer
grant applications to departmental chairs is Friday, October 27, 1989.
