Last day to drop a course without
academic penalty
"Dance Alive!" the official Florida touring dance company, will perform Friday,
October 1, at 8:00 p.m. in Elizabeth Hall. The troupe is composed of ten dancers
who have considerable dancing experience with other professional companies. Their
program will consist of classical and contemporary ballet as well as jazz. The
company is sponsored by the Gainesville Civic Ballet and the Florida Fine Arts
Council. It is one of the major programs in the university's Centennial celebration this year, sponsored by the Artists and Lecturers Committee.
An exhibit of paintings by famed painter and arts educator Lamar Dodd will be held
in the Sampson Hall Gallery October 2-27. The exhibit will begin with a lecture by
Dodd at Sampson Hall at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, October 2. The talk will be preceded by
a reception at 7:00 p.m. According to Fred Messersmith, "Dodd is certainly one of
the most influential art personalities in America and a major force in arts education
in the South." The exhibit is sponsored by the Artists and Lecturers Committee.
The Modern Brass Quintet, a chamber music performing group, will appear on Tuesday,
October 5, at 8:00 p.m. in the Elizabeth Hall auditorium. The California-based group
includes musicians with both recording and orchestral performing experience; their
repertoire is described as a creative blend of classical works and contemporary music.
Their appearance is sponsored by the Artists and Lecturers Committee.
The Stetson Fall Blood Drive will take place on Monday and Tuesday, October 4-5, from
noon until 6:00 p.m. on Monday and on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., in the
Stetson Room of the C.U.B. Student co-chairmen are Linda Hedgepeth, representing
Delta Delta Delta Sorority and Robert Hoelscher, representing R.O.T.C To avoid long
lines, please make an appointment by calling Ext. 215. We need your blood donation
and/or your support for the success of this drive. Thank you.
Information is available in each Dean's office regarding The Mina Shaughnessy Scholars
Program, an unusual grants program that supports educational practitioners to reflect
and expand upon the ideas generated by their experience. The Fund for the Improvement
of Postsecondary Education, in cooperation with the Carnegie Corporation, has announced
that approximately 15 awards of up to $20,000 each will be available.
