The members of the Steering Committee appreciate the special effort made by the chairmen of
the various committees in preparing their preliminary reports. We would like for the Chairmen of the department committees to meet with us on Friday, November 2, 1979 at 2:45 P.M. in
rooms 204/5 of the Carlton Union Building and the chairman of the principal committees to
meet with us the following Friday, November 9 at 2:45 P.M. in the conference room adjacent
to Dean Turner's office. The Steering Committee meets weekly at 2:45 P.M. on Friday in the
conference room adjacent to Dean Turner's office (with the exception above noted). Faculty
and staff along with students are invited to these meetings to discuss the self-study.
NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION - SCIENCE FACULTY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
The Science Faculty Professional Development Program is designed to help under-graduate
faculty at two or four year institutions with at least five year's teaching experience improve their effectiveness as teachers by spending time conducting research or independent
study at a location other than his/her home institution. Activities may include advanced
study or participation in ongoing research at academic institutions, industrial facilities,
or governmental labs. (NSF particularly encourages research participation in industrial labs.
)
The Foundation will provide a stipend and a travel allowance to the grantee, and an Activities
Support Allowance to the institution or organization of affiliation. Grants support 3-12
months of full-time study; NSF allows a great deal of flexibility in the tenure of the grant.

Dr. Eliane Norman, Department of Biology, attended a Chautaugua-type short course sponsored
by NSF on reproductive biology in flowering plants at the University of Georgia on Oct. 22-23.
HISTORY DEPARTMENT NEWSLETTER: A Department of History Newsletter will be published following the Christmas Holidays. I would like to have for this purpose the titles of all books
published by members of the faculty or by alumni of the university for inclusion. If you
know of such titles, even though your bibliographical data may be incomplete, I would appreciate your letting me have the information. Box 1336. . .

Michael W. Raymond of the English Department read his paper "The World According to Garps:
Technology and the Contemporary Fictive Imagination" at the Interface '79: Technology and
Humanities conference, October 25-26, in Atlanta, Georgia.
The following books by Michael Novak have arrived and are on the trade shelves of the library:

The library now has current College Catalogs from other schools on microfiche. If you care
to see a new catalog from another college please contact Sims Kline or Joe Myers in the
Reference Department.
The following students missed class Monday, October 22 and Tuesday, October 23 to participate
in an intercollegiate Golf Tournament in Miami: Todd Bolin, Mark Heartfield, Doug Laseter,
Steve Todd, Earle Hunt.
