There will be a brief meeting of the General Faculty and Administrative Staff, Wednesday
Morning, September 29th, at 10:30 a.m. (immediately following Chapel) in Elizabeth Hail
Auditorium. Items to include: Report of Fall Trustee Meeting, Report on Search Committee Meeting, and Long Range Planning Committee Report.
The LONG RANGE PLANNING COMMITTEE (a President's Committee) will meet in
204-205 Carlton Union Building on the following dates: October 14, November 11,
December 9, January 13, February 10, March 10, and April 14. All meetings are
open to faculty and administration. Sub-committee assignments have been made and
progress reports will be given October 14 concerning strengths and weaknesses of
the University. Also, a preliminary consideration will be given to priorities in the
University. ALL MEETINGS ARE SCHEDULED FOR 4:00 P.M.

"Is this trip necessary?" Those of us over 40 recall World War II discouragements to
intercity travel by ODT posters with the cryptic warning question. For the next 15 weeks
this urgent plea on our campus is reworded: "Is this telephone call necessary?" The
absolute saturation point has been reached in our internal dial switching equipment. The
new system under constant engineering planning since January 1976 will not be on line
until around January 1, 1977. Until then, PLEASE:
1. Keep your good humor and judgement about service delays.
2. Remember that 99% of the delays are mechanical and cannot be overridden by
our valiant and harried operators.
3. If you do not get a dial tone, keep trying. You '11 get lucky if you don't panic
or give up.
4. Keep both internal and external calls on target and to the point, as short as
allowed by courtesy, brief but not curt.
5. During busy hours (usual business day and evening hours for student/home
traffic) avoid unnecessary calls or those which can be rescheduled.
6. IN CASE OF EMERGENCY and when faced with a dead line, seek a toll phone
(in a residence hall) or send a messenger running for helpl
7. Dial "8" service for direct access to toll operators for collect, review tolls,
or calls charged to other numbers is still available but only until November 1,
1976 (due to telephone company external changes on that date).
