Summary of Faculty Senate Business. At the regular meeting of the Faculty Senate
on April 10, 1973, President John Johns, Athletic Director Glenn Wilkes, and Athletic Committee Chairman Kenneth Jackson responded to the following list of concerns
presented to them previously by way of the Senate Educational Policies Committee:
The Stetson University Faculty Senate wishes to express to the University Administration and Faculty its serious and urgent concern about the following matters, all of
which relate to academic aspects of the University:
1. The role of the Athletic Committee, which has not recently been active and
which has no guidelines to follow.
2. Implications of Stetson's participation in varsity basketball, baseball, and
soccer at the University Division level.
3. The distribution of Stetson student aid funds and scholarships to athletes
relative to the students in the three colleges.
4. Academic requirements for eligibility to participate in varsity athletics
(currently 0.6 GPA) and other extracurricular activities.
5. Academic requirements for eligibility to receive university financial aid
(currently there are none).
6. The use and accounting of work time by students, especially athletes, receiving financial aid.
7. The validity and function of a Physical Education major in a liberal arts
college.
8. The levying of admission charges by the Athletic Department and Music
School on students and activity ticket holders for University functions involving student
participants.
