The Stetson Alumni Association invites you to attend a dinner on Saturday, February 26, at
7:30 p. m. in the Stetson Room in honor of Harold M. "Prof" Giffin who will be retiring after
37 years on the Stetson faculty. The cost of the dinner will be $3. 00 per person and tickets
may be secured in the Alumni Office. This dinner is part of Homecoming activities which
begin on Friday, February 25, with the Education, Law, Music, and Ministerial Dinners at
6:30 p. m. A Homecoming brochure will be placed in each faculty member's post office box.
FACULTY SENATE NEWS: The Faculty Senate held its regular monthly meeting on the evening
of February 1 in the C. U. B. A Mortar Board representative presented an award to Dr. Ann
Morris as Faculty Woman of the Year for 1970-1971.
President Johns spoke informally on questions of interest to the faculty. He indicated that the
proposed 1972-1973 budget contained increases for the Library and for maintenance, and an
amount for salary increases similar to that budgeted for the present year. He expressed
interest in the offering of credit courses in nearby communities, particularly for courses in
the present catalog and taught by regular members of the faculty. He stated that Stetson will
remain a selective institution, and that innovation would be strongly encouraged.
The purpose and communication benefits of the University Council were briefly discussed.
President Johns stated his intention to appoint a committee to draw up guidelines for future
cluster college inquiries. He requested the Senate to submit a list of faculty nominees for
an advisory committee for the selection of a University Dean or Provost.
The Chairman reported receipt of a letter from the Law College stating that it will send a
non-voting representative to future Senate meetings; the DeLand faculty is also invited to
attend Law College meetings.
Dr. Edwin Coolidge was voted Chairman-Elect of the Orlando Section of the American Chemical
Society for 1972. He was also appointed Chairman of the Orlando Section's Committee on
Education, and a member of the State Section's Civic Service Award Committee.
