Professor Nicholas Alssen of the Foreign Language Department will serve as Chairman of
the section on Slavic and East European Literature and Linguistics at the South Central
Modern Language Association meeting in New Orleans on October 28-30. Represented in
the section which he will chair are, among others, Ohio State University, the University
of Chicago, and the University of Maryland. The topics range from a discussion of 12th
Century Slavic manuscripts at a Mt. Athos, Greece, Monastery to a presentation of the
characteristics of contemporary Standard Polish, to poems of the 19th Century Tartar poet,
Djalil.
Any Faculty member interested in taking a winter term group to Maine or Colorado in
January 1973, contact C. C. Colwell for exploration of the possibilities. No arrangements
of any sort have yet been made. Tentatively, instruction would have to depend on the
accompanying faculty member, with perhaps reciprocal one shot lecture-discussion
sessions with local faculty.
Awards will be presented at the University Women's Club Awards Dinner, November 20,
to the winners of the following tournaments: BRIDGE, GOLF, TENNIS, BOWLING, TABLE
TENNIS, AND BADMINTON. But! ! In order to present the awards, we first need
participants in the tournaments. We are therefore, asking the department heads to sign
up members of their faculty (and/or wives), to participate in one or more of these
tournaments. Then, as soon as possible, preferably by Wednesday, November 3, return
the names to Tolly Thwing, Box 1384. The department heads will have the Registration
blanks for entries in all the tournaments.
