Senior student Kei-Fung Lau, physics major from Hong-Kong, has just received his GRE
scores from his first semester examination. He ranks at the 98th percentile on the
Advanced Physics test; 98.5 percentile on the Quantitative test. The Physics Dept.
Dr. T. W. Beiler has just been elected to membership in the Sigma Xi Society. Sigma Xi
is the national honor society for recognition of outstanding contributions to all areas of
scientific research. Congratulations to Dr. Beiler!
Frances Buxton (School of Music faculty) presented a talk, "Some Experiences with Music
in the Socialist Countries of Eastern Europe" for the Volusia County Music Teachers
Association in Daytona Beach on February 15.
Mr. Samuel C. Foster, of the Sociology Department, is reading a paper this week at the
Southern Correctional Association at Florida State University in Tallahassee, entitled
"Organization Control and Institutional Effectiveness. " The data for this paper came
from his study of the internal workings of the Virginia prison system.
This past week the Mint Museum of Art (Charlotte, N. C.) announced the recognition of
Mr. Gary Noffke's "Chopping Knife" with its purchase by North Carolina National Bank
from the 8th Annual Piedmont Crafts Exhibition. A check in the amount of $150. is to be
sent to him from NdNB. Also, his "Swine Horn" was chosen for Honorable Mention.
The Florida Audubon Society sells United Stated commemorative stamps for the benefit of
the Bald Eagle, our national bird. If you would like to help with this project please send
commemorative stamps to Bob Loftin, Box- 1249. When cutting stamps from envelopes
leave a wide margin around the stamps. They are worthless if the perforation at the edges
of the stamps are not intact, or if the stamps are torn, thinned or folded. These stamps
are sold to wholesale dealers and the money used for the Eagle sanctuary program. The
dealers will not buy Christmas stamps nor any of the regular issues from l£ to 40£. This
also applies to foreign stamps from the countries which use stamps heavily such as Canada,
England, Germany, France, etc. The Bald Eagles of Florida will appreciate it!
REMINDER: The Faculty Frolics of 1971 will be presented Saturday, February 27 at
6:30 in the Stetson Room. Please be sure to get your check and reservation in to
Genevieve Lewis (Box 1397) by Wednesday, February 24.
