The 30th Annual Watercolor Competition sponsored by the Watercolor Society of Alabama
announced yesterday at the opening of the show, that Fred Messersmith's watercolor, "Dark of
the Moon" had won the top award of $250. The prize was given by the Friends of the Watercolor
Society at the Birmingham Museum of Art. This is the third time Messersmith's work has been
honored at the Birmingham Show.
Professor Messersmith, Chairman of Stetson's Art Department, has been invited to show his
paintings at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D. C. in the December 4th exhibition
entitled "Space and the Artist".
The below named ROTC cadets were absent from classes from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., this
date, October 8, for the purpose of having physical examinations accomplished at the Armed
Forces Entrance & Examining Station, Jacksonville, Florida.

A paper entitled "An Acidity Function for Carbon Bases in Aqueous Sulfuric and Perchloric Acids,
authored by Dr. Morris Reagan of the Department of Chemistry, appeared in the September 24,
1969 issue ofthe Journal of the American Chemical Society. Our congratulations to Dr. Reagan!
