The Faculty Senate met in special session on February 21 to discuss the topic of academic
freedom at Stetson. Chairman Schultz first addressed the meeting, summarizing questions brought to his attention by members of the faculty as a result of the Dick Gregory
incident, and the organizational apparatus available on campus to deal with questions
of academic freedom. President Geren then spoke, presenting his statement to the student rally on February 20, the resolution passed by the Board of Trustees on February
16, and his views on the matter. In subsequent discussion a motion was passed authorizing the Senate Standing Committee on Academic Freedom and Tenure (Senators
Chauvin, Medlin, and Dickson) to consider whether the Gregory incident comes within
their province and to recommend appropriate action.
NOTICE: A special meeting of the Faculty Senate has been called for Thursday, February 29, at 4:00 p. m. in Room 204 of the SUB. The agenda will include committee reports on the future University calendar and on academic freedom.
All Business and Liberal Arts sophomores will be excused from classes on Tuesday morning, March 5, and Wednesday afternoon, March 6, to take the College-Level Examination
Program tests. This series of tests is a sophomore requirement (except Music School),
and is made available to us under a special arrangement with the College Entrance Examination Board. Areas covered: English, Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities,
and Social Sciences and History.
The noted poet and historian, Peter Viereck, will inaugurate the series of Stetson Lectures
on Contemporary Affairs to be given annually, on the DeLand campus of Stetson University.
He will draw upon his travels in and studies of the U. S.S.R. and the U.S.A. for his three
lectures entitled "Embattles Creativity in a Machine Age. " They will be given under the
auspices of the Artists and Lecturers Committee in the Stetson Room of the SUB at 7:00
p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (February 28-March 1). They will be open,
without charge, to all members of the Stetson community and interested central Floridians.
At 4:00 Thursday afternoon he will give a public reading of his poetry in the Business
School auditorium and Friday afternoon at 3:30 he will be present for an author's party in
the University Bookstore.
