THE FACULTY BULLETIN, it is to be remembered, is official notice on all matters
contained in it. It is solely for the purpose of communicating between the aembers
of the University community and therefore cannot include matters not officially or
directly University business. If you do not happen to find a copy in your mail box,
ask for it.
SCHOLASTIC REQUIREMENTS to hold scholarships and grants in aid: By recent action
of the Committee on Scholarship Awards, approved by the President, al^ recipients
of tuition aid must maintain a "C" average; some categories of scholarships require
a "B^ average. The rule is interpreted broadly and individually by the Committee,
1956-57 CATALOGUE: Deadline for copy is October 31, 1955.
CLOSING HOURS FOR ELIZABETH HALL: This building will be locked daily about 10:00 P.M
Sunday at about 6:00 P.M.
CLOSING HOURS FOR SCIENCE HALL: The same as for Elizabeth Hall except that it will
be locked from Saturday at 6:00 P.M. until Monday morning.
USAGE: I suggest again this year that we make a valiant attempt to drop the use of
"Doctor" as a form of address, using rather "Mr.," "Miss," and "Mrs," I regard this
as a small step toward the democratization of our thinking about our place in this
community. It also happens to be characteristic usage in the larger Universities.

AMENDMENTS TO THE ABSENCE RULE: As announced at the opening faculty meeting, the
operation of the absence rule has been amended as follows; (l) All field trips
must be voluntary as regards student participation; (2) No instructor is free to
abrogate the 10$ rule except in individual cases. Consideration is being given to
the problem created by necessary absences that exceed the 10/6 maximum.
ABSENCES: It is very important to report absences immediately at the beginning
of the term. Double check your ratio of students to class cards (l::l).
