LEGITIMATE ABSENCES: Herbert D. Carlen had to go to the Orlando Air Force Base
Hospital on November 11th and 13th in connection with ROTC program.

ART EXHIBIT: The Fifth Annual Exhibition of Volusia County Art assembled for the
Homecoming celebration will be exhibited in the Elizabeth Hall Galley and Holmes
Hall until December Uth.
UNIVERSITY POST OFFICE: The University lost Office requests that we separate our
mail into "Campus Mail" and "Mail to be stamped by Mailing Machine" before deposit-
ing. There are deposit slots for each group.

REMEDIAL WRITING PROGRAM: The following is an excerpt from a Report on Remedial
Writing Programs which appeared in the September issue of School and Society:
"At present colleges and universities must face the problem of developing the
student who is deficient in English. If they accept students who cannot read and
write well enough to do college work, they must train these students in these skills
or divert them into other training or work where a high development of such skills
is not demanded. One means of developing proficiency in writing is the establishment of an intensive testing and writing program in the freshman year, with a checkup on writing in the junior or senior year.
The use of objective tests by college teachers and lack of attention to.good
form and to careful presentation of subject matter in acceptable English lead many
students to feel that members of the faculty can and will fill in the material lacking on a paper, provided the student has written down several fragmentary ideas
which suggest that he knows something about the subject. Upper-class students at
Louisiana State University are capable of more careful writing than is commonly
demanded of them. Many students report that they do not write any more acceptably
than they are required to write in order to receive an average grade in a course.
This being true, it is imperative that members of the faculty demand acceptable
standards on all written work. If a student does not meet such standards, he
should be required to pay special attention to his writing in consultation with the
English Laboratory.". .
EXTENDED BENEFITS ON OUR GROUP HOSPITALIZATION: Effective November 16, 1953 the
daily benefit for room is being increased from -06.00 to $10.00 and for other hospital
expenses from $60.00 maximum to $100.00. The monthly increase per couple or family
is $1.08 and for single coverage 38^. The University pays an equal amount.
