Message from the Director
This is my last Newsletter, as I will retire August
31st. The advertising for the new Dean of
Library and Learning Technologies went out
about two months ago, and applications are
being reviewed by a strong search committee,
chaired by an English professor and including
two librarians. My successor's title will be
appropriate for the direction academic libraries
have taken in the last decade, and I am pleased
with the Provost's vision for the position. It is a
great opportunity for an innovative librarian with
a desire to run a great library. To see a copy of

As usual, our Archives were featured at
Homecoming, with displays in the library and
several other places on campus. Saturday
morning we welcomed about 120 guests to help
celebrate Max Cleland's naming of the library's
Politicos Room in honor of long-time Political
Science Professor Wayne Bailey. That
afternoon, we welcomed a smaller group of
alumni who had served in the military during the
Vietnam War, as part of a special project to
recognize their service.
The massive shifting of collections to integrate
the art and music collections in the north wing of
the main floor began in earnest in April and will
be completed by mid-July. This includes moving
the Janice Jenkins Music Collection of scores
and recordings from Presser Hall to the duPont-
Ball Library where it will be housed in this newly
designated Fine Arts Wing. The collection is
named for Professor and Music Librarian Janice
Jenkins who selected and cataloged a large part
of the collection before her retirement. The
Music Computer Lab will remain in Presser Hall,
but this move will give some needed space for
the School of Music and provide more hours of
access to the collection for students.

Library's2011 Research Prizewinners
The library presents two prizes each year,
honoring students for research papers written
during courses in their first year. The third R.
Neil Scott Research Prize was
awarded to Jennifer Rose
Curtis for her paper, "The
Negative Effects of Sugar and
Nonnutritive Sweeteners: Can
We Have Our Cake and Eat it
Too?" Jenny Rose is from
Lake Mary, Florida, and
reports that she "has an ever-growing passion
for Jesus Christ and the Gospel that defines her
life." She is a Spanish major who is considering
becoming a teacher, perhaps one day in another
country.
The seventh Evans C. Johnson Research Prize
was awarded to Chelsea Whalley, who wrote
"Sexual Violence and Self
Destruction: The Shameful
History of European Colonization
and its Effects on the Native
American Population." Chelsea is
from Calgary, Alberta, Canada,
and is majoring in Sociology with
a minor in Integrative Health
Science. At Stetson on a softball
scholarship, she spends "a ton of
time devoting myself to the sport of softball."
She is considering law school with a focus on
international human/civil rights or pursuing a
Ph.D. in sociology to teach at the college level.
