Message from the Library Director
As you will see, we have been very busy since
the fall issue of this newsletter. Special visitors
included the great granddaughter of John B.
Stetson, Sandra Stetson Schifter Martinuzzi. I
had the pleasure of showing Sandy, her
husband Lou, and her sister-in-law Faye
Edwards Stetson Clarke around campus and
visiting with them over lunch. Sandy had never
been on campus before, but Faye attended
Stetson in the early 1950s prior to eloping with
fellow student Stuart Stetson, Jr.
I saw a lot of 1951 alumna and library supporter
Barbara Brundage Colegrove while she was in
DeLand for
Homecoming.
Barbara grew up
in DeLand and
enjoyed showing
her son Lloyd
and
granddaughter
Miranda around
town. At the
Friday night event at the President's home, she
was delighted to see Rabel Parson (1948),
shown on right, who delivered mail to the
Brundage home during World War II.
We used gifts from our Associates to purchase
furniture and to have more electrical circuits
installed so we could add six workstations. We
now provide forty workstations with printers for
our students.
A number of exciting things are going on and
you will read about some of them in this issue:
• establishment of a new endowment
• new professional level research and
business database for alumni
• some special gifts of books, furniture,
and nineteenth century manuscripts
• new research resources
New Library Endowment:
Become a Part of the Library's Future
When you look at the Library Associates
membership forms or our library web pages, you
will see a new choice among the ways to ensure
that Stetson students and faculty will have
access to the best library services and
resources we can provide, now and in the future.
The library currently has four named
endowments - all of which required a substantial
initial gift: The S. Elizabeth Stetson Endowed
Library Fund (for books in selected areas); The
Daphne Brownell Endowment for Books; The
Rinker Endowment for Business Resources and
Support; and The Frank A. and Grace I. Berger
Memorial Fund. Only a set amount of the
income from each of these funds is spent each
year, protecting the assets.
Our new initiative, a general Library
Endowment Fund, makes it possible for alumni
and friends to donate smaller amounts and to
become a part of this lasting endowment to
supplement and enhance Library services and
resources.
Alumnus Wes Brumback (1980) and his family
provided the "seed money" of $10,000 to start
this endowment, called simply The Library
Endowment, with the hope and anticipation that
others would add to it to build a significant
endowment to create income for the Library.
Wes has been a loyal Library supporter for
several years. He recognizes the need for a
combination of library materials and up-to-date
technology for students to do their research
today and to acquire the learning skills they will
need throughout their lives. A growing
endowment such as this one will produce
income that we can use wherever needed to
meet these objectives.
As others became aware of the endowment,
they also saw this as a special way to give. A
