DeLoach Heads Campaign
A full-scale alumni campaign for financial
support of the soon-to-be constructed Health and
Physical Education building has been launched by
national campaign chairman Cartha D. (Deke)
DeLoach, it was announced by W. Michael Chertok,
director of Development.
"We are now ready to offer our more than
15,000 alumni an opportunity to give their full
support to this important project," stated
Chertok, while announcing the campaign.
DeLoach (Class of '42), a former FBI
administrator, is now vice-president of PepsiCo,
Inc. and lives in New York.
Stetson trustees gave the go-ahead signal for
final planning and construction of the physical
education complex in September. The building will
include a new gymnasium and facilities for
classrooms, offices, concerts, convocations
and other events.
Headed by the board of trustees, Stetson's initial
activities have been centered around the soliciting
of gifts from corporations and nonalumni
individuals. The new campaign, Chertok explained,
will involve person-to-person and direct mail
solicitation of alumni.
Sites locations for the new Health & Physical
Education building is a matter of great importance
for the university. Dr. Earl Edington, chairman of the
Trustees, Wendall Jarrard, St., vice chairman, Dr. T.
Rupert Coleman, secretary of Trustees, President
John E. Johns, and Frank Wheeler, Trustee and
chairman of the building committee, are shown inspecting potential sites.
DeLand was the first community to become
involved in the gymnasium campaign, Chertok
pointed out, adding that a number of alumni in
the local area have made gifts and pledges.
Fred Mancinik, '54 was DeLand campaign
chairman.
Campaigns have also been conducted or are in
planning stages in Bradenton, Jacksonville,
Ft. Lauderdale and Miami.
Campaign leaders in Bradenton were
businessman Vernon DeSear and Trustee
Dan Blalock, Don Tullis, '57, headed the
Jacksonville fund program, assisted by
Louis Riette, '24.
A program to be conducted in Ft. Lauderdale will
be under the leadership of E. Clay Shaw, Jr., '61,
while Miami's campaign will be directed by
Dale Melching, '42.
Goal for the alumni phase of the gymnasium
campaign, based on immediate gifts and pledges
over a three year period, is $125,000,
Chertok reported.
"We are excited about this new health and
physical education complex and we believe that
the enthusiasm of our alumni, trustees,
President Johns and others will help us reach
our goal this fall," Chertok declared.
