Mrs. Margaret P. Klein Stetson Univ. Box 1418 DeLand Florida 32720 4D 9 VOL. 2 NO. 3 STETSON UNIVERSITY, DELAND, FLORIDA NOVEMBER 1973 MICKEY, GOOFY GREET ALUMS FORE? — No, Mickey and Goofy aren't playing a round of golf with unorthodox equipment; they're merely primping golf course at Walt Disney World. Vacation Kingdom has three championship caliber courses, including the Palm and the Magnolia, named for the hundreds of nature trees that dot their fairways. (Copyright WALT DISNEY PRODUCTIONS) BY LEE ROWELL Mickey Mouse, Goofy and all the other Walt Disney World characters will be looking forward to seeing the Stetson alumni at Disney World outside of Orlando in February. Your Director of Alumni Affairs had the pleasure of visiting Disney World several weeks ago. Surprisingly,,when he was enjoying the presentation of the "Country Bear Jamboreei' he discovered that several Stetson alums were part of the cast, or at least, there was a very close resemblance. He felt sure the fellow that sang "Blood on the Saddle" had attended Stetson in 1958. It was like old home week at Stetson when he went through the Haunted Mansion. There were several very familiar faces. You, too, can visit with your friends at Disney World this year by taking advantage of a special Disney World Tour planned by your Homecoming Committee for February. On February 24, following Homecoming activities for the weekend, a chartered bus will leave DeLand from the front of the Carlton Union Building on the Stetson Campus at 9:00 a.m. for Disney World. The bus will depart for DeLand later that evening at 10:00 p.m. The total price of only $14.00 per person will include transportation, admission to the Magic Kingdom and ten of the top major attractions, including the two mentioned above. This is certainly an opportunity you will not want to pass up. A reservation coupon is included in the Cupola. Please send in these reservations before January 1st, since limited space is available. PARENTS OF STETSON STUDENTS CAN SAVE ON INCOME TAXES Stocks which have appreciated considerably since purchase could be used to establish a "charitable remainder annuity trust" to pay the cost of education, save on income taxes and make a gift to Stetson University, too, according to information in a recent article in Business Week magazine. Persons in the 40 percent income tax bracket (taxable income about $31,000 per year) with $20,000 in appreciated stock, purchased for $4,000, could sell the stock over a four year period to meet college costs. The capital gains tax would be $3,200, leaving $16,800 to pay college costs. However, if the $20,000 worth of stocks were placed into a four year charitable remainder trust, $5,000 per year (or other pay out desired) would be available to pay educational costs with any remainder, built up through appreciation of the trust principle, to go to Stetson University at the end of the four years. Tax savings would be: First, an immediate charitable deduction on income tax of $2,674 which in the 40 per cent tax bracket would save $1,069.60. Second, the $3,200 capital gains tax would not have to be paid since a charitable institution will receive the remainder of the trust principal. Third, the student, assuming no other income, would pay approximately $800 income tax over the four years. Total savings then would be $3,469.60 ($3,200 capital gains tax saving less $800 student income tax plus $1,069.60 tax savings from the charitable deduction). Persons in the 50 per cent tax bracket would save $4,537. Chances are no gift tax would have to be paid since a man and wife together have an annual exclusion of $6,000 and a lifetime exemption of $60,000 which probably has not been fully used. In any case, gifts are taxed at a lower rate — 5V4 per cent for a $5,000 gift and 10% per cent for a $20,000 gift.
