Dr. W. S. Allen Resigns As
President of the University
Dr. William Sims Allen, who for thirteen
years has ruled the Stetson University campus
with a firm, God-fearing hand, resigned as president at a called meeting of the Board of Trustees
on September 26, giving bad health as the reason
for the resignation.
Upon receiving the unpleasant news from his
doctors, Dr. Allen called a meeting of the Trustees, exclaiming "A school must not have a
crippled man for its president." The Trustees
accepted the resignation "with extreme reluctance and deep regret," and only "because we
realize that to do otherwise would be doing Dr.
Allen an injustice." Dr. Allen was named President Emeritus and Dean Harry C.'Garwtiod was
named acting president.
Colonel F. N. K. Bailey, president of the
Board of Trustees, named a committee to consider Dr. Allen's successor. This committee consists of: O. K. Reaves, LLB '03, as chairman;
C. II. Bolton of Miami and L. A. Perkins, Jr. of
DeLand as members. Bailey, as president of the
Board, and J. P. Simmons, as president of the
Stetson Alumni Association, are serving as ,'ex-
officio members.
Dr. Allen's thirteen-year administration has
seen Stetson grow from a school of 373 students
to one of 2.200. Before the war years, the student body had almost tripled and now that the
GI fill of Rights has opened the door of education to untold thousands of young men , and
women Stetson has grown to heretofore unbelievable heights. Largely through his own efforts. Dr Allen has expanded the physical plant,
faculty and endowment to keep pace with :the
growtli of the student body,
If Dr. Allen is not remembered for the wofk
he has r'one in expanding the University, in
building the endowment, or in training young
Christian men and women, he wilhbe remembered
for his most repeated phrase: "Thus Stetson
continues to go forward."

HOMECOMING SET FOR NOV. 14-15
The d?tes for Homecoming, 1947, have been
announced as November 14, and 15. Plans:are in
the makirg for the most intertaining program yet
to he off(red for the benefit of the returning
former indents.
Fridav night, November 14, will open the pro-
rrpm with the Homecoming play at the Stover
Little Theatre, to be followed by alumni parties
for various honorary organizations'/ '*'•'
Saturday's schedule will begin ' with the
annunl Law School Breakfast.' Other "alumni
breakfasts and meetings will be scheduled prior
to chapel in Elizabeth Hall auditorium/' The.
pnnunl meeting of the Alumni'"Association will'
follow chapel as usual and 'the highlight o£ the
