PRESIDENT PHILLIP BUCK DIES
Mr. Phillip E. Buck, president of the Alumni
Association, died at 4:00 in the morning of Tuesday, January 14, at the George Washington
Hospital, Washington, D. C, of cirrhosis of the
kidney. His illness is believed to date from
World War I when he was injured in an airplane crash.
Mr. Buck, first post-war president, was elected at Homecoming, November 16, 1946, and had
laid definite plans to make the Association a
permanent organization. He began by appointing a Board of Governors that includes a number of the most outstanding alumni and former
students of the institution and continued by selecting a 25-man committee that is to help perpetuate the College of Law. This committee,
along with the Board of Governors, held its first
meeting in DeLand on December 16. A subcommittee was appointed to study the Yale Foundation with the idea in mind of establishing a
similar trust for the Stetson College of Law.
The Board of Governors, under Buck's leadership, drafted a resolution changing the Association Charter to give former students all the
rights and privileges of active membership and
abolishing all distinction between those who graduated and those who attended the Academy or
any branch of the University for at least one
year. This resolution increased the possible active membership of the Association from 2,800
to more than 18,000.
In adjourning, the joint meeting set Saturday,
January 25 as the date for a meeting in Orlando.
Judge Victor Hutchins, a class-mate of Buck's,
was elected to temporary chairmanship of the
Committee on College of Law.
Other committees appointed by Buck include
a Veteran's Affairs Committee, made up entirely
of undergraduate veterans, and an Athletic Committee to study the athletic situation at Stetson
and to determine if the Alumni Association is

capable and willing to entirely underwrite the
institution's athletic program. Plans were underway for committees to assist in the School of
Music and the Liberal Arts School.
His energetic love for Stetson and his leadership of the Association will be sorely missed by
all Stetsonians.
Mr. Buck is survived by his widow, Frederica
Lane Buck, Acad. '22, two daughters, Carolyn
Virginia, 1941-43, and Elizabeth Williams, a
student, and one son, Philip Edward. Mr. Buck
was intermed in Arlington National Cemetery
at 10:30 in the morning of January 16.
