Stetson Observes 84th Commencement
Stetson University will observe its 84th
Commencement in DeLand on Sunday, June 4,
at 7:00 p. m. in the Forest of Arden. Highlights of the program will include the awarding
of more than 280 undergraduate and graduate
degrees, commissioning of R. O. T. C. graduates, presentation of 50-year diplomas to
alumni, and recognition of recipients of honorary degrees and top awards.
The official opening of this year's Commencement weekend will be the annual President's Reception at the residence of Stetson
President J. Ollie Edmunds. This event, honoring graduates and members of their families,
will begin at 8:30 Saturday evening.
Baccalaureate Services will be held at
8:00 Sunday morning, also in the Forest of
Arden. Delivering the Baccalaureate sermon
will be Dr. Fred T. Laughon, Jr., pastor of
the First Baptist Church, Gainesville.
Dr. Laughon, a native of Portsmouth, Va.,
received his B. A. and D. D. degrees from the
University of Richmond, and holds a Th. M. de -
gree from the Southern Baptist Theological
Seminary. He was both baptized and ordained
in the Parkview Baptist Church of Portsmouth,
Va.
The Baccalaureate speaker has held
pastorates at churches in Virginia, Kentucky,
South Carolina and Florida. He was a member
of the State Mission Board of Florida
from 1958-63.
Following Baccalaureate Services Sunday
morning, graduates and their families are invited to attend churches of their choice in
DeLand.
The annual School of Music Commence -
ment Concert has been scheduled for 2:30
Sunday afternoon in Elizabeth Hall Auditorium.
The concert, honoring graduating seniors, will

BR. RAY V. SOWERS IS APPOINTED
DEAN OF COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS
Dr. Ray V. Sowers, professor of education and former director of the University's
teacher education program, has been appointed
Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. He is already involved in the work of this office.
Dean Sowers, who brings to his new position over 50 years of experience in education,
succeeds Dean William Hugh McEniry, Jr. ,
who is presently serving as both Dean of the
College of Liberal Arts and Dean of the University. Dean McEniry has resigned to become
Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs at the
University of North Carolina in Charlotte.
President J. Ollie Edmunds, in making
the announcement, said "this appointment
brings back into the administration the most
experienced school administrator within our
ranks. "
The Ottumwa, Iowa, native holds A. B.
