Surprise Scheduled
For Homecoming
Some real surprises are in store for
alumni returning to the campus for Homecoming February 18, 19 and 20, Walter M.
Baggs, director of alumni affairs, said as
the January issue of the Stetson Letter
went to press.
He has been meeting with the Homecoming Committee and reports that this
hard-working group is about to make a
final draft of a program which will be
sent to every alumnus in advance of the
annual trek to the campus.
Many alumni living in the North are
making their winter vacation plans coincide with the homecoming date.
Mrs. Blanche Fearington is alumni
chairman. Miss Barbara Rowe is faculty
and student coordinator. Miss Jo Lysek
and Ted Sucher are student chairmen.
James Y. Arnold, Jr., president of the
association, will preside at business sessions and at the election of officers.
Volunteer Workers Meeting Success in Lake,
Marion, Seminole, Putnam; Orlando Organized
The Anniversary Development Campaign for new buildings and a faculty
salary fund at Stetson University is off to a fine start. The hometown canvass
went almost double the minimum quota and fine leadership is being enlisted
as the drive moves into other areas.
Pledges and gifts continue to come into the Development Office from the
DeLand campaign. The latest total shows 411 pledges for a total of
$213,618.50. In addition, a rare coin collection appraised at $28,000 and a
check for $f 00,000 from the Merrill Trust have been received.
The first report meeting in Palatka produced approximately $7,000 and
the first report from Lake County included a $12,500 anonymous gift, another contribution of $1,000 in stock and several checks and pledges.
Some of the donors are giving stock or real estate at current market prices
while others were planning to give citrus and cattle.
Stetson must continue to receive funds in addition to the gifts made
directly to the Anniversary Development Program. Tuition paid by students
provides about two-thirds of the actual cost of their education.
As the workers in the hometown canvass gathered for a Victory Dinner,
reports posted on the tally boards showed $178,284. President Edmunds was
introduced to thank the workers, but before he could get to the microphone,
