Calling all alumni:
Are you ready for Stetson Weekend?
This year's big alumni event on the
DeLand campus — Stetson
Weekend, Feb. 21-23 — is nearly
here. Committees for the classes of'47,'52,
'57, '62, '67, '72, '77, '82, '87, '92 have been
busy organizing Reunion events for months,
but remember that Stetson Weekend isn't
just for the Reunion classes.
"Stetson Weekend is new, and it's for
everyone, combining the best aspects of
Homecoming and Reunion. So plan to
come even if you're not in a Reunion year;
there will still be lots to do," said Gary
Meadows, executive director of the alumni
association.
Special events planned by co-hostesses
Davina Yetter, a senior communications
studies major from DeLand, and Jerra
Fortner, a sophomore business
Feb. 21-23:
Hard Hats Required...
administration major from Sebastian,
include student skits, pre-game tailgate
parties, and a 1940s-theme alumni-student
dance at a DeLand Airport hangar.
There will also be class dinners; a golf
tourney and barbeque; alumni baseball,
soccer, and volleyball games; receptions; a
pep rally and basketball game; plus music
and more.
In keeping with the construction theme
of the weekend, "Hard Hats Required,"
you'll get to see the newly-completed
Mandy Stoll Tennis Center near Hollis
Intramural Field, and you can check out the
Library catalog on information superhighway
Stetson's library collection is now
accessible through the World Wide
Web, so off-campus users, including
alumni, have access to its catalog. Students
have access from their residence hall and lab
computers; faculty, staff, and alumni have
accerss from the ir office and home
computers.
The new, state-of-the-art Unicorn
Collection Management System integrates
the library catalog with circulation,
reserves, periodicals and acquisitions, said
Library Director Sims Kline
The systems administration team
implementing the automation system
included Betty Drees Johnson, '59,
associate director for technical services;
David Everett, associate director for public
services; and Debbi Dinkins, technical
services librarian.
The fully-integrated Unicorn system
allows users to find information on books,
periodicals and other media through
searches by author, title, subject and
keyword. Information on the itemfound can
be printed, downloaded, ore-mailed to the
user's e-mail address. The system also lets
users know if an item is already checked out.
The staff has had a big job bar-coding the
library's collection of 250,000 books in order
to automate circulation, Kline said.
The Unicorn system is the latest in
many changes at thelibrary. The first phase
of a three-phase, $4 million expansion was
completed this fall. Book stacks that had
stood for many years in the central atrium
were moved to make way for new computer
workstations. The area was rewired, new
carpet was laid and new furniture for service
desks and a comfortable reading area for
periodicals and new books were added.
The library's second phase of renovation
and expansion calls for a north wing
addition of around 13,400 square feet,
additional seats for both individual and
group study and additional stack space.
The third phase will include complete
replacement of the heating and air
conditioning system, improved access for
people with disabilities and internal
rearrangement of some book stacks, work
areas and offices.

duPont-Ball Library. Plus, the new Hollis
Center is under construction between
Griffith Hall and the swimming pool; and
the new Wilson Center is going up west of
the Edmunds Center.
