The alumni board challenges alumni
to determine Stetson's future
.n the past decade Stetson has propelled
itself to become one of the most academically
competitive schools in the Southeast. Stetson
has carved a place for itself as an institution
in which quality academics is as important as
teaching principles. Stetson has faced many
challenges as it has struggled to survive the
effects of economic downturns, while
strengthening its reputation in an increasingly demanding enviroment — an
enviroment that looks to the university to
teach generations how to think for themselves, be responsible members of society, and
live fulfilling lives.
Each summer Stetson Alumni Board
volunteers meet in DeLand for their annual
Summer Planning Conference. The major
emphasis of the conference this year was the
focus of Alumni Board support on the
critical issues facing the university. Stetson
has chosen to maintain its standards of
academic excellence despite the impact of
demographic and economic challenges. In
order to maintain its quality, the university is
calling on every resource available to:
1) attract the same caliber of students,
2) raise more money, and
3) assist graduates in securing jobs after
graduation.
The board plays a vital role in this external
relations program serving as a critical link
between the university and her constituencies.
Board members accepted this challenge,
and it is reflected in their commitment to
activities and programs for the year ahead.
(See calendar, page 2.)
In support of Admissions, board members
have volunteered to attend over 30 college
fairs, co-host six Information Sessions, and
utilize the new refenal card system to identify
ptospective students.
In support of the Alumni Fund, board
members will participate in nine prospect
screenings and six solicitation visits, six will
write letters, seven will set up alumni fund
information displays, five will recognize gift
club members at events, and two will help
during Phonathon.
In support of Career Networking, board
members wrote over 100 letters soliciting
members for the network, and 15 agreed to
write additional letters before November.
Ten agreed to make calls to solicit members
to the Career Networking program. They will
host a career connections reception in
Tampa.
The message for all of us was clear: "We
Determine Stetson's Future." The board and I
are calling on every one of you to take pride
in your connection with this unique institution. It is still a place that forms the foundations for learning and leadership for the
future. Only YOU can spread the word in
your community and amongst yout friends.
Only YOU can make this vision a reality!!!
If you would like to help us meet the
challenge, call 1-800-688-0101.

The first ASSIST scholarship has been
awarded. Alice Grim (center), an
entering freshman from Orange Park, is
the first recipient of the alumni legacy
scholarship. She and her parents John
and Janet McCullough Grim, '70, were
on campus for SOAR (Stetson
Orientation and Registration). In
addition to her mother, Grim also has
an uncle and aunt ivho graduated from
Stetson. The money for the endowed
scholarship was raised from alumni
through direct donations and through
the sale of citrus products.
