Homecoming 1995: A special treat for all altmmi Homecoming is quickly approaching, and this year's February 24-26 event offers something for everyone, according to Kathy Burley, associate director of the Alumni Association. "Alumni will have the opportunity to renew friendships and create memoties," said Burley. "Stetson's Small World," rhe theme of Homecoming, was developed with the help of a student committee from last year and rhis year's hostesses, Christina Gawron and Jennifer Maira. "This year's theme was cteated to heighten the awareness of multi- cultutalism on Stetson's campus," said Maita. Both Gawron and Maira, along with the Alumni Association, have been working with the Multicultutal Affairs Department and campus leadets and staff members to incorpo- tate Stetson's emphasis on multiculturalism into the weekend. For example, during registtation, foreign alumni's hometowns will be noted on maps to give othet alumni a chance to see how Stetson now has alumni all over the world, said Gawron. This year's schedule includes many events planned to appeal to a variety of tastes. The main event of this cafeteria approach is the President's Alumni Reception, which will take place on Saturday morning in the President's Garden. Emeriti and current faculty will be present to chat with alumni. The William Amory Underhill Award for Political Science will be presented and the nomination of ptesident-elect of the alumni association will be announced. Members of the 'S' Club will tee off in their golf tournament Ftiday morning, followed by a batbecue. Friday night comedian Bobcat Goldthwait, who has appeated on HBO, The David Letterman Show, The Tonight Show, and The Police Academy movies, will take the stage. Saturday gives alumni and current students a chance to mingle duting the picnic in the Forest of Atden, followed by the Two Mile Road Race. Children of all ages will be able to enjoy the parade on Satutday at 3 p.m. The Homecoming Committee is soliciting the support and involvement of students, businesses, and alumni for the patade. Other highlights include music school performances and Decade Parties for alumni from 1940-1955. The Duncan Art Gallery will also be open during the weekend. Alumni of sotorities and fraternities and cutrent Greek students will have the opportunity to see one another in the all new Policies on alcohol use and Greek Rush will change Two major campus issues — the timing of Gteek Rush and the use of alcoholic beverages — have been the subject for much discussion among the campus community, alumni, parents, and friends. Input has been sought from all groups abour the recommendations. Aftet study by a student/faculty/ administrative committee, Gteek Rush will move back to the Fall semester. Rush will be held, beginning next Fall (1995), duting the fall bteak, which is a new four-day holiday instituted with the new academic calendar. Aftet a two-yeat study, a student/faculty/ staff task force has recommended that students, over the legal age (21), be allowed to consume beer, wine, or wine coolers in the privacy of their residence hall and Greek house rooms. The groups also recommended rhat use of these beverages, by those 21 years or older, be allowed at registered parties in public areas such as the Stetson Room and the lounges or residence halls and Greek houses. There are 321 students currently living in residence halls who are 21 years or older. The Alumni Association Board of Directors will hear an update from Vice President for Campus Life, Dt. Jim Beasley, at their February board meeting. The student affairs and executive committee of the Board of Trustees approved the policy change; the full board will vote on it at theit April 20 meeting. "This is a mote tealistic approach (than the ptesent prohibition policy," said Hal Marchman, '59, chair of the trustee student affairs committee. "The one we have now won't work because we ate just closing out eyes. But we need programs rhar will involve students in working with their peers who are having problems with alcohol," Marchman told the committee last September. He believes more resources must be invested in finding and helping "the one in ten" students who cannot handle alcohol because they are alletgic to it. Greek Tailgate Parry. All alumni and students will not want to miss the opportunity to display their Stetson Hatter spirit and watch both the women's and men's basketball teams defeat Florida International. Homecoming '95 is designed to provide alumni with activities which they can enjoy, yet not feel pressured to attend. "People have so little time, but they want to come back to campus to see friends," said Burley. Homecoming provides nourishment to the soul by "tenewing friendships and creating new memories." Hatters to play KC Royals The Stetson Hatters baseball team will battle the Kansas City Royals major league team on Thursday, March 2, at 1 p.m. at Baseball City, near Davenport, Fla. "All alumni are invited to attend the game and then later that evening, support the men's basketball team as they begin confetence tournament play at the UCF arena," said Head Baseball Coach, Pete Dunn.
