Reunion' Weekend] Don't miss the fun! Spring 1994 'April 22-24, Alumni News of Stetson University 3. Volume XX No. 3 Classes/ invited back for Reunion Weekend, April 22~~=r~~24 Two special programs have been added to the traditional Reunion Weekend program to make the April 22 - 24 event even more fun for alumni returning to campus. Reunion Weekend is now geared to the whole family. A program for children and grandchildren of alumni has been planned. Kappa Delta Pi, the honor society for educators, will direct age and interest appropriate activities during the weekend for children ages 5 and up. Babysitting service will be available for children ages 4 and under. Another new event is the Reunion Golf Tournament. Set for Glen Abbey Golf Club, the scramble tournament is open to alumni, guests, faculty and friends. Alumni can also look forward to time with old friends at the all-class dance and the class parties. "Everyone is coming home to Stetson. It will be a weekend of great parties to rekindle that optimism we once took for granted," said Todd Richardson, 1984 Class Co-chair. A barbecue, all-class convocation, and president's reception are also planned to give all alumni an opportunity to enjoy themselves and renew friendships. A special program, "Retrospective: Remembering 40 Years at Stetson," featuring Evans Johnson, Malcolm Wynn, John Hague, Gerald Critoph and other former professors, will be held on Saturday. "This is our chance to take back the campus, to reminisce, and to make new memories!" said Richardson. All alumni in Reunion classes were sent registration information. About 1,000 alumni returned to the DeLand campus for the three-day event and enjoyed a variety of activities, said Kathy Burley, associate director of alumni programs. One of the new events, the President's Breakfast, was well received by alumni who had a chance to talk to former professors and classmates, said Kimberly Lane, one of the student hostesses. Alumni joined students, faculty, and administrators in the annual Homecoming parade through downtown DeLand. Many awards were handed out during the weekend, including the distinguished alumni, distinguished service, and Carlton awards (see Winter 1994 Cupola). The following received honorary degrees: Jack and Irene Fortes, John and Marge Bowley, long-time friends of the university (Jack and John served the university in staff positions); Diane Hansen, wife of Rod Hansen, 1992-94 alumni association president; former professors Elsie G. Minter, Maxine Patterson; and James T. Kearse, who produced the Tip of the Hat recording. The Martha Johns Chapter of the national alumni association, Washington, D.C., presented this year's Amory Underhill Award to student Jake Bebber of Mount Dora. The award is named in honor of the former assistant U.S. attorney general and 1936 graduate of the College of Law and recognizes a political science senior who demonstrates the greatest potential for developing confidence in government. The more alumni who return for Homecoming, the more fun everyone has, says Burley. Next year's dates are Feb. 24 - 26, 1995. Photo by House of Hatton Jan Bozard Latour takes helm of alumni association Jan Bozard Latour, a 1978 graduate, has been elected president of the alumni association, after serving for more than five years on the association's board, and one year as presidentelect. She has served as district chair for the St. Petersburg area, was the founder and national chair of the ASSIST program that raises scholarship dollars for relatives of alumni, and has served as national reunion gifts chair. Jan's husband, Eddie, is a 1976 graduate of the DeLand campus and a 1979 graduate of the law school. They have two children and reside in Oldsmar.
