Alumni return for reunion with classmates Members of Stetson graduating classes of '90, '85, '80, '75, '70, '65, '60, '55, '50, and '45 got together April 28-30 for their 5 th to 50th reunions, catching up on the news of classmates, observing the changes on campus, and temembering "the good old days." Alumnus Lynn Langford McDaniel, '70, a Tampa teachet involved in the Young Astronaut program, brought special guest Alex Serebrov, cosmonaut and Russia's teacher in space. Setebrov spoke to Russian Studies and education classes while on campus. All the reunion alumni enjoyed a special barbecue on the Hat Rack Patio. After the batbecue, some alumni attended the Stetson University Gala at Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach, featuting the School of Music. Others attended individual class parties that evening in local alumni homes. On Saturday, alumni enjoyed a full day of activities which began with a btunch in the Commons.The classes assembled in Elizabeth Hall Chapel for the Alumni Convocation Celebration which included the election of class officers for Reunion 2000, class skits and songs, class gift announcements, and class reunion photos. Lunch was followed by an All- Class Golf Tournament, Spotts Challenges and time fot shopping downtown. Saturday evening, alumni were welcomed by 1990 grads Joanne Felton, Maria Cassella Poedtke and Heidi Pape, enjoy reminiscing at the Friday night class party. The weekend ended on Sunday with a 9 a.m. Chapel Service in Elizabeth Hall, led by Dt. Chatles Bugg, class of '65, followed by brunch in the Stetson Room. Trustees pass recommendation on alcohol policy change Aftet receiving endorsements from all segments of the Stetson community, the recommendation to allow limited consumption of alcoholic beverages by students 21 yeats of age or older on the campus was approved by the Board of Trustees. "Aftet much discussion, the Student Life Committee, Faculty Senate, Student Government Association, Ptesident's Patents Council, National Alumni Association Boatd of Ditectors, Trustee Student Life Committee and Trustee Executive Committee voted for the change," said President Doug Lee. "We wete unable to deal with the alcohol abuse with integrity, as long as we denied that out students had a ptoblem. This decision will allow us to face the ptoblem squately and sttengthen out education and counseling ptogtam to help out students deal tesponsibly with alcohol," said Lee. Discussion is underway now to develop the guidelines, which will be implemented in the 1995-96 academic yeat. These guidelines will include alcohol education and ptevention measutes, building on programs already being conducted by the Counseling Center and Health Services. Additional resources will be directed to these programs, said Vice President of Campus Life James Beasley, '67, '68 MA. Students respond to Oklahoma City tragedy Membets of the Alpha Xi Delta and Delta Sigma Phi Gteek otganizations raised more than $4,500 in one day fot the victims of the Oklahoma City bombing tragedy. Students stood at the intetsection of Woodland Boulevatd and Minnesota Avenue collecting donations ftom passing motorists, while othet students collected money at the Carlton Union Building. Theit collections wete donated to the Red Cross to help the victims of the bombing. The university extends its sympathy to all those affected by the bombing, including those alumni, parents, and ftiends of the university living in Oklahoma City. Marty Davis, 'SO^-to— head national alumni association in 1996 Trial attorney Marty E. Davis, Miami, a 1980 business graduate, was elected president-elect of the National Alumni Association at the recent Homecoming meeting of the association board of directots. Davis, who teceived his juris doctorate at the University of Miami, has been involved as a volunteet for the university for more than eight years. He has served the alumni association in a vatiety of capacities including chair of the Alumni Fund. "I have had the pleasute of working closely with Matty over the past five years," said Jan Latout, '78, ptesident of the association. " He is a very enthusiastic and committed volunteet. I know the alumni association will greatly benefit from his leadership." Davis was active in a vatiety of campus organizations as an undergraduate, and he continues to serve his community. "Matty brings to the association strong and creative qualities of leadership and vision which will guide our organization toward the 21st century," said Gary Meadows, executive ditectot of the association. "His legal background, coupled with his enthusiasm, place out organization with the fight person at a ctitical time in our history."
