Spring 1996 Volume XXI No. 3 From the Alumni Association President Thanks for meeting the challenge! Every year, Stetson alumni generously support theit alma matet through gifts to the alumni fund. These gifts, in tutn, benefit out students ditectly by ptoviding scholatship opportunities and academic support. In order to help teach this yeat's alumni fund goal the alumni association districts participated in a District Challenge. Through this challenge, evety alum who conttibuted to the alumni fund this fiscal yeat not only impacted the overall goal, but also helped his or her district's tesults. And, the results ate in: •:• Gteatest dollat amount raised by a district: Orange/Seminole County District, with just over $118,000; and * Largest numbet of donors within a disttict: Orange/Seminole with 269 donots. Special thanks to John, '70, and Sandy BeVille Furches, '72, Region A chairs, and Vicki Hammack, '93, Lake/Sumtet District chair, for theit extta efforts in getting the word out to theit districts about the challenge. Although we missed our $450,000 goal this yeat, Stetson's alumni genetously contributed more than $340,000 to the genetal alumni fund, as of May 31. The real winners are current and future students, who can continue to benefit from the quality highet education experience we enjoyed. Groundbreaking held for Wilson Athletic Center Pat and Patricia Wilson met on the Stetson Univetsity campus as students in the 1940s, and on Aptil 17, 1996, they returned to bteak ground for a building that will bear their name. The Wilson Athletic Centet, to be built adjacent to the Edmunds Activities Center, will provide needed facilities fot the athletic and Spott and Exercise Science and allied health ptogtams. The Wilsons have given $750,000 toward the $1.5 million centet. Funding is also being provided by the McDonald Benevolent Foundation, which has donated $670,000. The $9.5 million consttuction program, scheduled over the next thtee years, is "building opportunities fot students." It includes four projects on the DeLand campus: the Wilson Athletic Center; the Hollis Center, for which the univetsity will bteak ground in August; the Mandy Stoll Tennis Centet; and the renovation and expansion of the duPont- Ball Library, with Phase I underway. At the College of Law, a new legal infotmation facility will improve services for current law students, faculty, and Florida Bar members. Reunion classes celebrate Stetson bond with friends Reunion Weekend is always a special time on campus. This year some of the celebrating classes took some extra steps to insute a fun- filled event. Class chairs Frank Brown, Jr., and Corky Tedder Dannals, Class of 1946, extended invitations to former professors and adminis- ttators and DeLand area residents who attended Stetson in the mid-40s. The Saturday night of Reunion Weekend, Caffe DaVinci, a DeLand night spot, was transformed into the Cellat Doot, a former coffee house on campus. "We tealize that young alumni may not have the tesoutces to make a large gift," said Gaty Meadows, executive ditector of the alumni association. "But, we must watch out budget, and make some tough decisions. We spend about $3 — $5 pet alum on mailings." Don't miss a single issue.
