The alumni of the ten classes will gather April 26-28 for the second annual reunion weekend on the Stetson campus for graduates celebrating their fifth through their fiftieth reunion years. The events will include an all-class reunion barbecue on the Hat Rack Patio, individual class parties, class meetings, and election of class officers (to plan Reunion 1996). During the Alumni Convocation classes of'41, '46, '56, '66, 71, '81, and '86 will present class gifts. All classes will present a class skit or song, and class reunion photos will be taken. reel aim campus A reception in the garden of President H. Douglas Lee's home will precede the individual class receptions and dinners, which will be held in various DeLand restaurants. During the dinners, members of the classes of '41 and '66 will receive their half-century and quarter-century diplomas. Later in the evening members of all the classes will gather at the DeLand Hilton for a reunion dance. On Sunday morning, the weekend will draw to a close with a special chapel service in Elizabeth Hall for the reunion alumni. A brunch in the Stetson Room will follow, to give alumni a last chance for reminiscing and catching up with one another's lives before heading home. Hatters show up for the Round Up More than 1,000 alums showed spirit, some donning their Stetsons, as the Hatters were rounded up for Homecoming 1991. The Alumni Association honored those serving in Desert Storm and named a president elect, while the university honored two alums and Chancellor and Mrs. Pope Duncan during the weekend. The executive board of the Alumni Association passed by acclamation a resolution honoring those alumni and their families serving in Operation Desert Storm. "When we drafted this resolution, we knew it was important, but now that the war is over, it is even more important that we honor these alumni and their families," said Bill Roberts, president of the Alumni Association, as the resolution was presented. The Alumni Association also unanimously approved the nomination committee recommendation of Rod Hansen, '72, Palm Beach, Fla., as president- elect of the Alumni Association. Hansen will take office at Homecoming 1992. Lt. General James Wendell Crysel, '59, and Dr. Helen Quincy Woodard, '20, were this year's recipients of Distinguished Alumni Awards for their outstanding achievement in their professions and life which has brought distinction and recognition to Stetson. Chancellor Duncan and wife, Margaret, were recipients of the Doyle E. Carlton Award, given for recognition for support of Christian higher education and in apprecia tion for their contribution to the life and development of Stetson, the City of DeLand, and the Stateof Florida. Homecoming 1992 is planned for January 17-19. Mingling— Homecoming provided an opportunity for alumni to meet students. Volume XV11I No. 2 Stetson recognizedJor^ building character For the second consecutive year Stetson University has been selected for the John Templeton Foundation Honor Roll for Character Building Colleges, one of only 108 schools nationally and the only university in Horida to be honored. For 1991, Stetson, Notre Dame, Wake Forest and Duke were among the universities recognized for making "the development of strong moral character among students a priority," according to the foundation. All four year, accredited colleges and universities were eligible for nomination by presidents and development directors. "Stetson is proud to have been included on the John Templeton Foundation Honor Roll again this year," Dr. Lee said. "Stetson has a strong commitment to Christian values and to creating a campus culture that fosters moral responsibility and genuine concern for persons. This award is an incentive for us to strengthen our commitment even more in the future." The Honor Roll was established in 1988 by investment advisor, philanthropist and Rhodes Scholar John Marks Templeton. Era ends for R.O.T.C. Stetson's ROTC unit, which leaves the campus this spring after 40 years, was in the spotlight at Homecoming with an open house at their headquarters in Brittain Hall and an alumni breakfast. Recently, Stetson entered an cross- enrollment agreement with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, authotizing Stetson students to receive ROTC commissions through Embry-Riddle. The unit's history is a distinguished one, going back to the first military science course at Stetson in 1890. During WWI, a Student Army Training Corps (SATC) came to campus and in 1919 the first ROTC was established. The unit was withdrawn at the end of a year, however, and ROTC was not revived until fall term of 1950. The first women were admitted in 1974. Although ROTC units have been controversial on some other campuses, the Stetson unit is being withdrawn because it produces too few commissioned officers. Host schools are required to sign up at least 15 students per year and Stetson averages only about half that number.
