President Carter to speak at Stetson Former President Jimmy Carter has accepted an invitation from Stetson University to delivet the second annual Stewart Lecture for the Institute fot Christian Ethics. The lecture is scheduled for the evening of October 26 in Edmunds Center and possibly will be preceded by a student forum. "President Catter personifies the values of Stetson," Dr. Doug Lee said. "We are deeply honored that he has accepted out invitation." Carter, rated by many observers as America's most influential former president, is best known for his international peacemaking efforts through The Carter Center at Emory University in Atlanta and for his association with Habitat for Humanity. He cuttently is part of an ambitious effott to turn Atlanta's poorest neighborhoods into a laboratory for combating such difficult problems as crime, poverty, illiteracy, drug addic tion, teenage pregnancy and homelessness. Carter sees "The Atlanta Project" as a coordinating centet and training camp for community-based programs, building on existing efforts. Carter has continued his interest in the environment and human tights through Global 2000, Inc. and the Carter-Menil Human Rights Foundation. He has authored sevetal books, including his autobiography, Why Not the Best?. The Stewart Lecture Series was inaugurated last February by Nobel Peace Laureate Desmond Tutu. The series is named for Stetson's first dean of the chapel, Irish missionary and pastor Dr. James A. Stewatt. Details for the lecture are not yet final. A green homecoming celebration for alumni: Stetson and the environment The return of the parade down Woodland Boulevard, a new time of year, and an environmental theme were things alumni will remember about Homecoming '92. The Hatters also added to the festivities by beating basketball rival Georgia State in one of the most exciting games this season. Stetson honored eight leaders for their professional achivements and service to the univetsity. DeLand civic leaders Dick and Dinky McMahan received the Doyle E. Catlton Awatd, given fot outstanding setvice to Stetson and highet education. Bill Robetts, '66, national president of the Alumni Association for the past two years, and Mark C. Hollis, '56, president of Publix Supermarkets who established the Hollis Leadership Development Program, were recipients of Stetson's Distinguished Service Awards. Distinguished Alumni Awards went to Ptofessot Joe Master, '58, chaitman of Stetson's M.E. Rinker, Sr., Institute of Tax and Accountancy; Dr. W. Morgan Patterson, '50, former president of Georgetown College, Ky.; Carolyn Miller Parr, '59, a United States Tax Coutt judge in Washington, D.C.; and Dr. Jean F. Dickman, '50, a long-time medical missionary to the Middle East. (The Spring/ Summer ProVeritate will carry more on all these awatd winners.) Rod Hansen, '72, director of brokerage in Florida for Prudential Insurance Co. of America, was elected 1992-94 national president of the Alumni Association. Among the alumni returning to campus was Webb Wiggins, '67, who gave a harpsichord concert on Friday evening. Stetson's Sports Hall of Fame inducted four new members in conjunction with the Homecoming celebration: Debbie Toole Hartman, '80, Denise Wall Ward, '65, Pete Dunn, '70, and Frank Burnell, '84- Homecoming parade participants included floats, decotated cars, and ttucks, like this one, carrying the cheerleaders and mascot. Mark Your Calendar Spring Holidays Reunion Weekend *92 Spring Commencement March 16 - 22 April 24 - 26 May 17 Calling all reunion classes: Come home April 24*26 Reunion '92 is just around the corner and all classes celebrating their 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 year reunions are invited back to campus to celebrate. "Class chairmen, gifts chairmen, and their committees have been working hard for the past several months to plan class activities and get in touch with fellow alumni," said Gary Meadows, '56, executive director of the alumni association. Graduates from 1942,1947,1952, 1957, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977,1982, and 1987 are expected on campus for the three-day event, Aptil 24 -26. Friday activities include an all- alumni class barbeque and class parties in DeLand alumni homes. Saturday's schedule includes an Alumni Convocation, when classes will present their reunion gifts to President Lee and perform a class skit or other activity.
