Record crowd back for reunion
Members of the classes of '87, '82, '77, '72,
'67, '62, '57, '52, '47 and '42 returned to
DeLand Aptil 24-26 for their 5th to 50th
reunions. It was the largest crowd in the
three-year reunion program, according to
Gary Meadows, Alumni Association
executive directot.
Classes met individually on Saturday
morning, and then assembled in Elizabeth
Hall Auditorium for introduction of new
class officers, class gift announcements, class
skits, and class reunion photos.
Saturday evening's activities culminated in
a Reunion Dance.
"Reunion weekend was a "magic" 48 hours
for me," said Dee Hague Rutledge, Class of
'47 teunion chair. "Suddenly the calendar
rolled back 45 years amid the hugs, kisses,
laughter, and wonderful stories."
The weekend concluded on Sunday with
Alumni Chapel Service, led by Dr. William
Two alums receive honorary
degrees for achievements
Dr. June Kehr Burton, '65 (M.A. '67), and
Jack Haddon Coldiron, '53, will be presented
with honorary degrees at the 109th Commencement ceremonies in May.
Dr. Burton , associate professor of history
at the Univ. of Akron (Ohio) since 1971,
has earned an international reputation as a
scholar in the field of Revolutionary and
Napoleonic French history. She was named
and is included in the 5th edition of World
Who's Who of Women.
Coldiron, professor of voice at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary since 1963,
is a former Stetson faculty member and has
recently appeared in recital at Guildhall
School of Music and Drama and the Royal
Academy of Music, both in London.

Stetson honors ministers
and chaplain of the year
Stetson University has recognized three
Baptist ministers and a chaplain as 1992
Ministers and Chaplain of the Yeat.
The Reverend Hudson Slaughter (Class of
1975), First Baptist Chutch, Osprey; the
Reverend Mark O. Wilbanks, Southside
Baptist Church, Jacksonville; the Reverend
Jerry Chumley, Thomas Memorial Baptist
Church, Quincy; and Dr. Leon Essex,
founder of Chaplains to Community and
Commerce, Inc., and chaplain of Hialeah
Race Track in Miami, were cited for outstanding service to the Christian faith, their
congregations and the univetsity.
Nominations for ministers of the year are
made by various Florida Baptist churches and
organizations, in categories based on church
size.

The Stetson alumni
association needs you!
In the 1990's Stetson has become quite dependent upon alumni for guidance, leadership,
and financial support. Our alumni association
will continue to develop successful programs
which keep alumni informed and in contact
with our university. While it is easy to be
"high tech," we always want to be "high
touch" in all alumni activities.
My goals for the Alumni Association in
1992-1993 are:
1. Increase alumni awareness, involvement
and participation.
2. Reach out and touch all alumni in a
personal way.
3. Develop long-term plans for programs,
activities, and fiscal responsibility.
The stewardship of Stetson is entrusted to
the alumni. Our alumni association staff,
board members, and volunteers are committed
to the continued growth and well being of our
university. With the help of many, we will be
successful. Please become more involved
when asked. I look forward to meeting as
many of you as possible
