Foundation gives $4*5 million to Stetson
The William M. and Nina B. Hollis
Foundation of Lakeland, Florida, has
pledged to give Stetson University $4.5
million to establish scholarships to assist
students from lower and middle income
families, announced Stetson President H.
Douglas Lee and Mark C. Hollis, president of the foundation and Stetson
alumnus, Class of 1956.
The Hollis Scholarship Program will
be merit based and will assist academically talented and leadership oriented
students. Provisions are made to offer
special assistance to students from lower
and middle income families who otherwise could not afford to attend Stetson.
Awards also will be made specifically to
minority students who possess academic
ability, personal motivation, and financial need. In addition, the fund will assist
successful Stetson students who are
experiencing financial difficulty while at
the university.
One important intent of the Hollis
Scholarship Program is to provide an
opportunity for students to attend Stetson
who might fall outside the boundaries of
current federal and state need based
financial aid standards. These students
might come from middle income fami

from families with more than one child

A number of Hollis Leadership Scholars will be named each year, beginning in
the fall of 1991.
According to Hollis, $4 million of the
pledge will be added to Stetson's scholarship endowment fund. Four hundred
thousand dollars will establish a life
Challenger Endowment Fund to begin to
offset the recent loss of Florida Baptist
Convention support, which the university
had designated for scholarships. An additional $100,000 is an unrestricted gift

Bishop Tutu to visit
Stetson in February
Nobel Prize winner Archbishop Desmond
Tutu, one of South Africa's most widely
recognized anti-apartheid activists, will
speak at Stetson's Institute for the Study
of Christian Ethics February 11 at 7 p.m.
in the Edmunds Activity Center. Ticket
information will be announced.
Bishop Tutu's address will be the inaugural James A. Stewart Lecture in
Christian Ethics. Bishop Tutu is visiting
Stetson at the invitation of Dr. Clyde E.
Fant, institute director and dean of the
chapel. The lecture series is named for
Stetson's first dean of the chapel.
The Institute, in its second year, brings
students face to face with business,
political, law, medicine, and ministry
professionals to discuss moral and
religious conflicts, Dr. Fant said.

Bring your jeans to homecoming this
year. With a "Hatter Round-Up" theme,
the atmosphere will be casual and relaxed
during Homecoming weekend, March 1-3.
"Homecoming 1991 also wilLfeature
more student involvement; we have three
times the number of students on committees this year," said Gary Meadows, '59,
executive director of the alumni association. "One of our long-range plans is to
turn it over to students. We'd like the
event to be students welcoming back
alumni."
On Friday, March 1, a 50+ Golden
Hatters Reception is planned at the
President's Home for alumni of more
than 50 years. A new event will be
included on Friday's schedule — the
International and Minority Student/
son's ROTC will have an open house.
Friday night will be busy, with a
combined banquet at the DeLand Hilton
for all former athletes and members of
the classes of the 1930s and '40s, hosted
by the "S" Club and the Golden Oldies.
The Alumni Association's Stetson
student leaders will sponsor the All
Alumni Dinner in the Stetson Room. At
8 p.m. three comedians will provide
family entertainment in Edmunds
Center. The Hilton will be the site of the
All Alumni Dance at 10 p.m.
Saturday morning there will be special
breakfasts for law graduates; ministerial
graduates; and graduates in science,
math, and computer science. A picnic is

Garden, a Golden Oldies gathering in
the Chapel, the Alumni Association
Meeting, a School of Music "Music
Showcase," a 5K Road Race, sorority
open houses, and various Decade Parties/
Receptions for all alumni.
Saturday evening an Alumni Banquet
is planned, with presentation of distinguished alumni and distinguished service
awards, followed by a 7:35 p.m. men's
basketball game, with Stetson facing the
University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
On Sunday morning, Stetson's ROTC
alumni will gather for a breakfast,
followed by a Chapel service and brunch.
