Alumni Association welcomes 414 new graduates
Four hundred and fourteen undergraduates have joined the Alumni Association
after being graduated during the 107 th
Spring Commencement. Fifty master's
degrees and three honorary degrees also
were awarded.
Dr. Thaddeus Seymour, retiring
president of Rollins College in Winter
Park, Fla., Dr. William Dolbier, *61, a
professor of chemistry at the University
of Florida, and Mrs. Carolyn Weatherford
Crumpler, who served in the national
office of the Woman's Missionary Union
from 1974 until 1989, received honorary
degrees.
Dr. David Nylen, professor of marketing, was named the 1990 recipient of the
McEniry Award for Excellence in
Teaching.
The McEniry Award, the most prestigious given to a DeLand campus faculty
member, recognizes "the highest attainment of scholarly and teaching excellence." Established in 1974, it honors the
memory of Dr. William Hugh McEniry,
former dean of the university.
For the first time, the McEniry Award
recipient was notified before the ceremony so he could be prepared to make
the commencement address.
Dr. Nylen was a member of the Stetson
faculty from 1968 until 1972. He returned to Stetson in 1979 as dean of the
School of Business Administration. He
retired from his administrative post in
1984, to concentrate on teaching and
research as professor of marketing and
holder of the Eugene M. Lynn Cbair in
business administration.
He is the author of a widely used
college textbook, Advertising: Planrung,
Implementation and Control, now in the
third edition. His newest book, issued
this year by Prentice-Hall, is Marketing,
Decision'Making Handbook.
Dr. Billy Graham, who was recovering
from April surgery, canceled plans to
speak at Commencement.
Alumni leadership make 1990^91 plans
The Alumni Association Board of
Directors (formerly known as the Alumni
Council) met in June for the annual
summer planning conference.
Led by Bill Roberts, '66, president of
the association, the group discussed the
plans for the new career networking
program and alumni district activities.
The career networking program, Collegiate Alumni Network, would match
alumni with young graduates moving into
their area. Thus far, more than 50 alumni
have volunteered to participate in this
service.
'The program is in the developmental
stage, but will become available to
graduating seniors in January 1991.
Eventually, the program will expand to
help any alumnus who is considering a
location or career move," said Gary
Meadows, executive director of the
alumni association. "We encourage all
interested alumni to find out more about
the Collegiate Alumni Network."
The board also reviewed new executive committee positions and responsibilities, received an update on university
activities, and discussed ideas for 1991
Homecoming and Reunion.

Stetson named to
Templeton Honor Roll
Stetson University has been selected for
The John Templeton Foundation Honor
Roll for Character Building Colleges, one
of only 102 schools across the nation and
the only university in Florida to be
honored.
Stetson, Notre Dame, Wake Forest,
Duke and 98 other schools representing
32 states, were chosen "to formally
identify and acknowledge those schools
which make the development of strong
moral character among students a priority," according to the foundation. All
four-year, accredited colleges and
universities are eligible for the Honor
Roll.
Stetson also was recognized by the
Florida House of Representatives in April
for contributions to higher education and
academic excellence.
