Task force appointed to examine student life at Stetson
A Presidential Task Force has begun
a yearlong review and evaluation of
student life at Stetson as part of the
institution's long range planning process,
according to Dean of the Chapel Clyde
Fant, the task force chairman.
The task force, composed of faculty
members, students and other community
■ .-presentatives, will have the threefold
purpose of identifying and evaluating
how the Student Life Program at Stetson:
1) articulates its commitment to Christian
values and moral responsibility; 2) builds
a sense of community, provides opportunities for privacy and the pursuit of
individual interests, and encourages
respect for fundamental human rights,
self respect and respect for others; and
3) provides a significant and satisfying
social life for all students.
"We invite constructive input from
all parts of the Stetson community,"
Dr. Fant said. "Our task is to study all
phases of the Student Life Program, to
identify strengths and problems and to
make recommendations as to how the
university can strengthen its student life
programs as a contribution to the
university's primary mission — to
educate.
A final report will be submitted to
President Lee by May 1, 1989, and he
will be responsible for the actions to be
taken on any recommendations.
Appropriate committees of the Board of
Trustees will be involved, Dr. Lee said.
Campus Notes
Stetson University is one of three
colleges in Florida designated as an
Alternate Teacher Preparation Center by
the Florida Department of Education.
The state-funded program will allow up
to five universities in Florida to establish
curriculum to bring top liberal arts
graduates into the field of education,
offsetting the teacher shortage.
More than $1,300 was raised by
students for Jamaican relief after hurricane Gilbert. Catherine Deitheorn and
Lisa Krucker led the fundraising effort
on campus. Cliff Phillips, chair of the
student group, Coalition for Social
Responsibility, organized the collection
of food and clothing for the Jamaicans.
He traveled to Jamaica to supervise the
arrival of the goods.
A new On-line Intelligent Catalog
is available at the duPont-Ball Library.
This state of the art equipment, made
possible by a grant from the Rinker
Foundation, will eventually give students
and faculty access to all of the library's
titles. Ultimately, there will be terminals
within close access to every academic
building on campus.

opportunities await
Stetson alumni
Dear Fellow Alumni:
I began my duties as the Executive
Director of Alumni Programs on June 1.
Since then, I have been learning about
our Association's history, strengths,
problems and opportunities, and I am
very excited about our future. When I
met with alumni council members in
August at the annual planning conference, I became even more convinced
that we have the potential to be one of
the best alumni associations in the
nation.
In the next several months, you will
be receiving information relative to
some new ideas and plans. These will
include travel and study opportunities,
purchasing plan affinity cards, and
summer opportunities here at Stetson for
you and your children. In addition,
you will hear about Homecoming and
class reunion opportunities.
Stetson is on the move in many
ways. You should share in our planning
and programs and be informed about
our goals and objectives. Your participation is essential to Stetson's future

Stetson receives good
marks from national
publications
Three publications have included
Stetson in their national rankings of
colleges and universities. Stetson is listed
as one of the top 25 comprehensive
universities in the nation, in the U.S.
News and World Report special report on
"America's Best Colleges," released in
the October 10, 1988 issue of the magazine.
Good Housekeeping magazine lists
Stetson as one of "50 Best Bargains in
Colleges" in the United States in their
October 1988 issue.
Changing Times magazine also has
listed Stetson as a "high quality, low cost
college" this year.
