Headlines Homecoming '81
The Big Band Era is alive and
well and coming to Stetson for
Homecoming February 20th!
The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra,
conducted by Buddy Morrow, will
highlight Homecoming festivities that
include basketball and baseball
games, reunion buffets, a tennis tournament, bluegrass music, receptions,
lectures, an ice cream party and a
road race.
Registration tables will be open
Friday, Feb. 20, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
and events begin at noon with an
alumni council luncheon. Sports
events dominate the first afternoon of
the three-day celebration: on the
schedule are the annual
alumni/varsity baseball game, a
tennis tournament and the football
players' reception and dinner.
The reunion class buffet from
6-7:30 p.m. precedes the Big Band
sounds of the One and Only Tommy
Dorsey Orchestra, which will swing
from 8-12 p.m. in the Edmunds
Center. Conductor Buddy Morrow,
one of the original Dorsey band
members, insists that the band
retain the authentic sound and style
of the group's namesake as well as
maintain their repertoire that
includes Dixieland, current rock,
rhythm and blues, progressive jazz
and ballads. Great music knows no
generation gap, and this year's
Homecoming entertainment will
prove that conclusively. There even
will be a carpeted dance floor for all
the hoofers in attendance!
Saturday morning's traditional
athletic, ministerial and law
breakfasts will be joined this year by
the health and medical professions
breakfast for all alums involved in any
aspect of those fields.
Coffee in the President's Garden
and the annual Alumni Association
meeting are scheduled Saturday
morning, leading up to the barbecue
and bluegrass music in the Forest of
Arden. This year's Field Day events
will include races, relays, and
non-contact games.
Saturday afternoon activities cover a
wide variety of interests, from a
road race to several receptions, and
from women's basketball against
Bethune-Cookman College (B-CC) to
the first McEniry Showcase Lecture,
by Dr. C. Carter Colwell. The annual
alumni dinner (with speaker Doyle E.
Carlton, Jr.) precedes the men's
basketball game against the B-CC
Wildcats.
The evening will not be over after
the final buzzer in the Edmunds
Center, however. An old fashioned ice
cream party, a sing-along and the
display of alumni authors' works are
scheduled in the Stetson Room to top
off the evening.
Dr. O. Lafayette Walker will be the
featured speaker at Sunday morning's
chapel service in Elizabeth Hall,
following coffee and donuts there
from 8:30-9 a.m. Homecoming '81
comes to a close with a visit to nearby
Blue Springs to see one of nature's
gentlest mammals, the Florida
manatee, which has been on the
endangered species list since 1976.
No matter how you look at it,
Homecoming '81 promises good food,
good friends and good fun. Plan to
celebrate with us! (Look for the
