Geography." He has written numerous articles for journals in the fields of
geology and geography. A major
achievement of Chauvin's career at
Stetson was the establishment of the
Gillespie Museum of Minerals in 1957.
Named after its original patrons,
Thomas and Nellie Gillespie, the
Gillespie Museum has collected more
than 20,000 gem and rock specimens
for exhibit. Chauvin has been listed in
"Who's Who Among World Geographers," "Who's Who in the South"
and "American Men of Science."
The Rev. Ben C. Fisher was born in
North Carolina and received his
bachelor's degree with honors from
Wake Forest University. He received
the master of divinity degree from
Andover-Newton Theological School
and later did graduate work at the
University of North Carolina and was a
research scholar at the Baptist Theological Seminary of Ruschlikon, Switzerland. He was ordained a minister at
the First Baptist Church of Canton,
N.C, in 1938.
Fisher served as pastor of Baptist
churches in North Carolina in the early
years of his ministry. His career encompasses posts in higher education,
religious journalism, and offices in
church-related organizations and
church leadership.
He served as executive director-
treasurer of the Education Commis
sion of the Southern Baptist
Convention from 1970-78. He was
executive secretary of the Council on
Christian Higher Education of the
Baptist State Convention of N.C. from
1962-70. The Rev. Fisher held various
faculty and administrative positions at
the Southeastern Baptist Theological
Seminary and at Gardner-Webb
College before assuming his responsibilities with the state convention.
Fisher's writing career includes
serving as editor of the Southern
Baptist Educator from 1970 to 1978
and as author of various manuals and
monographs, including "A Public
Relations Manual for Church-Related
Colleges" and "A Manual for College
Trustees." He also has contributed to
various religious and academic
journals. He has been listed in "Who's
Who in Religion" and "Who's Who in
America."
MARIS RECEIVES McENIRY AWARD
Gary L. Maris, professor of political
science, was honored with the
McEniry Excellence in Teaching
Award, during the 101st Commencement at Stetson.
The award, Stetson's most prestigious faculty honor, is named for
William Hugh McEniry, former dean
of the university credited with elevating academic standards and strengthening the faculty during the years
following World War II. Dean McEniry
died in 1974. The award is based on a
vote of faculty and students.
The presentation to Maris was made
by Dr. Richard B. Morland, the 1983

Dr. Maris is a Stetson alumnus who
joined the faculty in 1965 following
receipt of his master's and doctorate
degrees from Duke University. He was
named to Phi Beta Kappa and held the
Otis Green Fellowship while at Duke.
"In the classroom, he is known as a
knowledgeable and demanding, but
eminently fair, instructor; one who
cares deeply for his students and
spends untold hours helping them,"
Morland said in making the presentation. "The quality of his scholarship
and competence in his field is evident
in the text he uses in his course in International Law, published by the
University Press of America, that he,
himself, wrote," Morland added.
Maris has served two terms as
chairman of Stetson's faculty senate
and is one of the founders of the university's Model U.S. Senate and
Model U.N. programs. He received
the Outstanding Service Award from
the West Volusia Council on Human
Relations for his "tireless efforts to
improve the lives of citizens of
DeLand."
