Campaign Announced

Advanced gifts of more than $12.5
million have been received to begin
"Stetson/$50,000,000," a
comprehensive, 10-year financial
support campaign, it was announced
following the annual fall meeting of
the trustees. The announcement was
made jointly by President Pope A.
Duncan and the Rev. John L. Pelham,
chairman of the trustees.
Pelham stated that the trustees had
tentatively approved the campaign in
May, 1979, on the condition that the
university raise $10 million by
September, 1980, to demonstrate the
potential success of such an effort.
Little did the trustees dream, he said,
that so much success would come so
soon.
The campaign has two phases. The
first extends into the university's
centennial year (1983) with a goal of
$20 million. This interim goal includes
$8 million for operating gifts, $8.5
million for capital and endowment
gifts and $3.5 million for deferred
gifts.
Phase II of the campaign has a goal
of $30 million and is scheduled for the
five years following the Centennial.
"We have an excellent, small
university. We're not seeking to
increase our size," Duncan stated.
"Our first priority in the campaign is
to maintain our current high-quality
program.
More than 160 Presidential Counsellors were honored at a dinner at the home of Ken Kirchman in September. The tennis court was tented and carpeted
for the evening and members of the Concert Choir provided musical entertainment.
"It is necessary for us to take steps
to maintain what we have, and yet, we
want to improve. We must improve
selectively, always keeping in mind
what we can do for students."
The $12.5 million received during
the advanced gifts portion of the
program includes gifts from current
and former trustees totaling nearly $6
million.
Not included in the $12.5 million is
more than $100,000 pledged by Florida
Baptist churches which have
responded to that portion of the
comprehensive campaign which seeks
$750,000 to endow a Chair of Christian
Studies in the university's department
of religion, (see page 3)

Palm Beach attorney; university family
campaign - 0. Lafayette Walker,
chairman of Stetson's department of
religion, and Earl B. Edington, retired
pastor of the First Baptist Church of
St. Petersburg and trustee; Baptist
churches - E. Earl Joiner, professor of
religion, and John L. Pelham, pastor of
the First Baptist Church of Palatka and
chairman of the trustees.
