Homecoming registration continues at the Carlton Union
Building on Saturday morning,
Feb. 25 at 7:30 a.m. A full day of
activities will be launched by three
special breakfasts—Sports Hall of
Fame in the Garden Room;
Ministerial Breakfast in the
Student Lounge; and Law Alumni
Breakfast in the Stetson Room.
After breakfast, a very popular
Homecoming event will take place
as coffee and tea are served at a
reception in the President's
Garden. President and Mrs.
Duncan will be on hand to meet
and greet all returning alumni.
The Annual Alumni Meeting will
be held in Elizabeth Hall at 10 a.m.
The agenda includes a report from
the President and the presentation
of Distinguished Alumni Awards
and the Doyle E. Carlton Award.
After the Annual Meeting the
big Bar-B-Que begins in the Forest
of Arden. Student organizations on
campus will set up displays around
Holler Fountain from 11 a.m. to 1
p.m. giving alumni an opportunity
to sample campus life in the 1980s.
Numerous open houses, tours
and receptions fill the afternoon as
alums are invited to the residence
halls, Baptist Campus Ministry,
the English and Education departments, and the business school.
The Greeks also will hold open
house at the fraternities and at the
Panhellenic building.
Sports on Saturday include a 10
a.m. tennis match with the Lady
Hatters opposing Georgia Southern
at Stover Courts; a 1 p.m. baseball
game against University of South
Florida at Conrad Park; an alumni/
varsity soccer challenge at 2 p.m.
at the lower intramural field; and a
five kilometer Homecoming Road
Race beginning at Edmunds
Center at 2 p.m.
If you're ready for some rest and
intellectual stimulation, join fellow
alums in the John E. Johns Room
at 3 p.m. for the McEniry Show
case lecture delivered by Dr.
Richard Morland.
The grand Homecoming Banquet honoring retiring Dean Robert
Chauvin will begin at 5 p.m.in the
Carlton Union Building with
musical entertainment provided by
the Glee Club under the direction
of "Prof" Giffin.
The evening once again provides
a dilemma—so sports fans will
head for Edmunds Center for a
7:30 tap-off against Georgia State
and musical theater buffs head for
Stover Theatre for an 8 p.m.
curtain opening of The Robber
Bridegroom.
Sunday morning is traditionally a
time when alumni can reflect on
new friends made and acquaintances reunited and give thanks for
being able to return to alma mater
another year. The Chapel speaker
is Dr. Edgar Cooper '43, editor of
the Florida Baptist Witness.
Chapel will be held at 9 a.m. in
Elizabeth Hall followed by Brunch
in the Stetson Room at 9:45 a.m.

the reunion dinners, breakfasts

Morland to Give "Showcase" Lecture
Dr. Richard B. Morland will
deliver the McEniry Showcase
lecture at Homecoming on
Saturday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m. in the
John E. Johns Room of Elizabeth
Hall. His lecture is titled "Faith in
Education—America's Essential
Genius."
Morland, winner of the 1983
McEniry Award for Excellence in
Teaching, has 31 years of teaching
experience at Stetson. "Hugh
McEniry was the one who recruited
me into Stetson," Morland
recalled. "We were undergraduates at Birmingham Southern
College. He insisted that I come to
Stetson and I probably wouldn't
have if McEniry hadn't asked me."
Morland joined the Stetson
faculty as head basketball coach
and chairman of the athletic
department in 1952. He served as
head basketball coach for five
years, compiling a laudable record.
In a switch to classroom teaching
after earning his doctorate from
New York University in 1958,
Morland pursued his field of
educational philosophy and its
relation to physical education He
was the director of a Ford Foundation program for master's degrees
in education at Stetson, and took
over the chairmanship of the
graduate division in 1962. In 1969
he was appointed chairman of Stetson's department of education, a
position he held until 1975.
Morland's contribution to the
Centennial McEniry Lecture Series
was titled "What's it all About
Alfie." His talk on sorting out
values and ideas to develop a
personal philosophy of life was
delivered to a standing-room-only
crowd in Elizabeth Hall last
November. Homecoming planners
expect another enthusiastic reception for this much-loved educator
and lecturer at Homecoming. Blast
off and be there at 3 p.m. on
Saturday, Feb 25 in the John Johns
Room.
