SJETSON UNIVERSITY LIBRARY Congratulations, Class of '85 The Stetson University Alumni Newspaper Vol. 13 No. 4 (USPS 990-560) Summer 1985 Groover and Zeigler win top honors for class of '85 By LINDA OULDERS Martha "Marcie" Groover, DeLand, and Mark Zeigler, Venice, were honored with the Stetson Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award for "outstanding character." The awards were presented by Dr. Pope A. Duncan, at Awards Day ceremonies held in May, in Elizabeth Hall. The Sullivan Award, established in 1925, is named in honor of the first president of the New York Southern Society. According to the foundation guidelines, the award is presented annually to one female and one male student whose personal example and influence throughout the campus best exemplify the "finest spiritual qualities of humanity and high character." Marcie Groover, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Groover, Sr., was recognized for her work on Stetson's a ward-winning forensics team where she received state and national awards for three years. Groover, a humanities major, has been on the Honor Roll or the Dean's List during her_ four years at Stetson. She was electedto speak for the graduating class at the 1985 Commencement. Mark Zeigler, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Felix Zeigler, was recognized for the leadership he has exhibited. Zeigler has been awarded several academic scholarships, has been on the honor roll for four years, and has earned membership in Psi Chi, psychology honor society; and in Gamma Sigma Epsilon, chemistry honor society. He served his fraternity Pi Kappa Phi as chaplain and secretary. He was president of the Stetson Interfraternity Council, named Greek man of the year, 1985, and has served on the Parents Weekend committee. Zeigler was the 1985 Homecoming chairman, a resident advisor for two years and was chosen to speak at the 1985 Commencement. Four receive honorary degrees Four outstanding Florida men were honored at Stetson's 102nd Commencement exercise, when each was presented an honorary doctorate degree from the oldest university in the Sunshine State. Former Florida State senator Doyle E. Carlton, Jr.; the Rev. Fred H. Broehmer, pastor and chairman of the Florida Baptist Convention State Board of Missions; the Very Rev. LeRoy Davis Lawson, first Dean of Saint Peter's Episcopal Cathedral in St. Petersburg; the long-time Stetson music school dean, Paul T. Langston, were honored. Carlton, former trustee of Stetson and a trustee of the University of Tampa, served in the Florida senate for 10 years. He received the St. Petersburg Times Award as Outstanding Senator in 1959. Carlton has served on the executive committee of Southern Baptist Convention, as president of the convention's Brotherhood Commission and of the Foreign Mission Board. In 1984, Carlton was named "Champion of Higher Independent Education" by the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida, Inc. Carlton received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Boehmer, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Brandon, has held various denominational posts in Tennessee and Florida. He is vice president of the Tampa Ministerial Association and is a former president of the Baptist Convention of New York. A native of Canada, Boehmer has been a member of the State Board of Missions since 1980. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. Lawson was an adjunct faculty member of Stetson in the philosophy department from 1954 until 1966. During that time he was director of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in DeLand and he built the Canterbury House, the Episcopalian Ministry at Stetson. Lawson was a member of the Southern Society for Philosophy of Religion. Lawson received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. Dean Langston received an honorary Doctor of Music degree. Dr. John Pelham, pastor of First Joiner, professor and chairman of the religion Baptist Church in Palatka and former Stetson department at Stetson, served as co-chairmen trustee, will assume the position of vice of the Florida Baptist Church division of the president for Church Relations July 1. campaign. Pelham was elected by the board of trustees at the May meeting. He will replace Dr. James Potter who has been serving as acting vice president for church relations since 1983. "We are very happy to have Dr. Pelham," said Pope A. Duncan. "The trustees feel his longtime relationship with Baptists in Florida will aid Stetson and Baptists by strengthening ties and providing excellent education for students in a Christian atmosphere." According to Duncan, Dr. Pelham will be involved in student recruitment and also will help all Baptist entities by responding to their interests. Dr. Pelham, '50, served as a member of the Stetson Board of Trustees for 10 years and was chairman of the board for four years. He has served as president of the Florida Baptist Convention and chairman of the State Board of Missions. For the past 22 years he has been pastor at the Palatka church and has been a member of Kiwanis for 15 years. Dr. Pelham was honored by the Stetson Alumni Association with the Distinguished Service Award and named "Urban Minister of the Year" for 1972 by the university.
