Carlton, Jr., Sally I. Gillespie, Patricia Maxcy Wilson, Senator Max Cleveland and George Neukom, Jr. were elected to the board of trustees at the February meeting. Long-time trustee honored with Carlton Award David H. Harshaw, who has served Stetson University as a trustee for more than 34 years, was awarded the University's highest honor during its annual Homecoming Celebration. The Doyle E. Carlton Award, named in honor of former Florida Gov. Carlton, is presented each year by the Stetson Alumni Association in recognition of outstanding efforts on behalf of the university. Harshaw, 81, is currently a director of John B. Stetson Co., maker of fine Western hats. He is the former president of the company, as weU as serving on its board of directors. Stetson President Dr. Pope A. Duncan said, "Mr. Harshaw has served the university as a trustee perhaps as long as anyone else in Stetson history. He is one who has always been diligent in the pursuit of the best interests of the university." Harshaw earned his bachelor's degree from Wharton and a law degree from Temple University. In 1955, he received an honorary doctoral degree from Stetson. Active in civic affairs, Harshaw is a member of the board of trustees for West Park Hospital in Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife, Frances, have been married for 11 years. He has two chUdren and six grandchildren. Page 7 Trustees of Stetson University have elected four new members and returned one previous member to the board. Doyle E. Carlton, Jr., a Wauchula rancher, former state senator and chairman of the board of Havatampa Cigar Corp., served on the Stetson board from 1969 to 1984. He has resumed service to the university with another five-year term. Also elected to five-year terms during the Feb. 21-22 meeting were three Stetson graduates: Patricia Maxcy WUson of Frostproof; George A. Neukom, Jr., Zephyrhills; and Mack N. Cleveland of Sanford. Stetson Alumni President SaUy I. Gillespie of New Smyrna Beach wiU serve a two-year term to coincide with her leadership of the alumni group. Mrs. GiUespie is the owner and president of Sol-SaUi Inc., a cosmetic manufacturing firm. She also serves on the Daytona Beach Community CoUege Board of Trustees and the board and executive committee of the Summer Music Theater. She earned a bachelor's degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a master's degree from Stetson. She also attended the Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. Sen. Carlton served in the Florida Senate for 10 years, beginning in 1952. Twice he was honored for his senate performance, once as Outstanding Freshman Senator and again as Outstanding Senator of the 1959 Session. Since leaving pubUc office, he has been active in church activities. He is a member of the board of trustees for the New Orleans Baptist Seminary Foundation and a member of the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. He is past vice president of the Florida Baptist Convention. Mrs. Maxcy is a homemaker and serves on the board of directors of the Latt Maxcy Corp. She also is a director and vice president of the Maxcy Foundation and a past member of the Florida Education CouncU. An American Library Association Trustee Honor Award recipient, she was named Woman of the Year in Frostproof. Neukom is president of B.E. & A.O. Smith Groves Inc. and chairman of C & N Insurance Agency Inc. He also is vice chairman of the Pasco County regional advisory board of First Union National Bank of Florida. He is a member of the Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce and was chosen Business Leader of the Year in 1981. Sen. Cleveland, a graduate of the Stetson CoUege of Law, is an attorney with the firm of Cleveland and Bridges in Sanford. He served in the Florida House of Representatives for 12 years and as a state senator from 1963 to 1966. He is current president of the Stetson Lawyers' Association and belongs to the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Middle District Court and Florida Bar Association. Alumni praise Raymond The Alumni Association has presented its 1986 Distinguished Service Award to Daytona Beach attorney Paul E. Raymond. Raymond accepted the award from former alumni president, Bob Kent, during the annual Homecoming Banquet. President Pope A. Duncan said, "Mr. Raymond has been one of the truly great assets of this university as general counsel. He is a counsel who wiU give you an answer promptly and in writing, and I appreciate that." Raymond, 81, who taught in the Stetson CoUege of Law from 1932 to 1941, served as dean of the law school from 1938 to 1941 and has been the university's attorney since 1977. He retired in 1984 from private practice after nearly 40 years with the firm of Raymond, WUson, Conway, Barr, Burrows and Jester. he received hisTaw degree in 1930 from the University of Iowa. Raymond also has earned two law degrees from Harvard University and honorary degrees from Stetson and Bethune-Cookman CoUege. Raymond has served as chairman of the National Conference of Bar Examiners and the Florida Board of Bar Examiners. An active participant in civic organizations, Raymond has been Paul E. Raymond president of the Daytona Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Central Florida Council of Boy Scouts. He also was a member of the boards of trustees for Florida Memorial CoUege and Bethune- Cookman CoUege. In 1953, he was given the Daytona Beach News-Journal Leadership Award. He and his wife, Frances, have been married for more than 57 years. His two sons, David and Thomas, are physicians and practice together in West Palm Beach.
