Stetson Honors Alumni at Homecoming
Stetson Homecoming Weekend,
Feb. 23-25, was highlighted
by the presentation of the Doyle E.
Carlton Award to insurance
executive Eugene M. Lynn of Boca
Raton and three Distinguished
Alumni awards.
A 1978 recipient of a doctor of
laws degree from Stetson, Lynn has
made generous grants to Stetson's
Business School Foundation, Inc.,
and to the university's endowment
fund. He is a charter member of the
business school's advisory board
and Foundation.
Lynn was named a Champion of
Higher Independent Education in
Florida last year by the Independent
Colleges and Universities of Florida,
Inc., an association of Florida
schools.
In 1955, Lynn became president,
chief executive officer and director
of U.S. Epperson Underwriting Co.,
Lynn Underwriting Co., Lynn
Insurance Agency, Inc., and five
other insurance companies. He and
his organizations have been active in
most of the national and regional
lumber, automobile dealer and
motorcycle associations throughout
When Ed Furlong relinquishes his
duties as Dean of the School of
Business Administration at the end
of this year, it will mark the end of a
great period in the history of Stetson
University. When I arrived at
Stetson in 1946, Ed had already
been teaching here for several
years. It was during the time I was
on the faculty that he became acting
director of the School of Business
and then was named the Dean.
Ed has served the University
unselfishly, cheerfully, and capably
through all these years in many
capacities including a stint as
Business Manager.
He has also been a good citizen of
his community. Not only was he
recognized for this by being elected
Mayor of DeLand, but his
faithfulness as a parishioner of Saint
Barnabas Episcopal Church has
made him a pillar of that fine
congregation.
Ed has seen a very remarkable
thing happen in the attitude of
students toward the study of

Trustees Approve Budget
Trustees of Stetson University approved a record-setting $13 million
budget last month in their annual meeting in DeLand.
The budget for the coming fiscal year represented an increase of more
than $1. million, the largest in the 96-year history of the school, according
to Dr. Pope A. Duncan, president.
"The budget adopted will be for the operation of the three schools and
colleges here in DeLand and the College of Law in St. Petersburg," Dr.
Duncan stated.
"Much of the increase is in estimated costs of utilities, particularly
* electricity. We will launch a concerted effort to reduce consumption during
the coming year," Dr. Duncan added.
"We have tried in this budget to strengthen our position of library
expenditures," Dr. Duncan said. "Inflation has caused great increases in
the costs of books and other library materials, greater perhaps than
anything other than utilities.
The Stetson trustees also elected Mark Hollis, vice president of Publix
Markets, to serve on the board. Hollis, a 1956 graduate of the university,
was elected to serve a five-year term. Rev. Joe Bamberg of Milton, Doyle E.
Carlton, Jr., of Wauchula, Amy S. Wilcox of Jacksonville, Rev. Conrad
Willard of Miami and B. Frank Wheeler of Ovieda were re-elected to the
board.
Dr. John L. Pelham was re-elected chairman of the trustees. The Palatka
pastor has served as chairman since 1977. Also re-elected were B. Frank
Wheeler as vice chairman, Kenneth P. Kirchman of Longwood as
secretary, and Wendell Jarrard, Sr., of DeLand, as treasurer.
PORTRAIT UNVEILING—Stetson President Pope A. Duncan applauded as
Chancellor J. Ollie Edmunds' daughter Jane, granddaughter Emily and
wife Martha unveiled a portrait of the chancellor during a faculty reception
for the Edmundses in February. The painting, by New York portrait artist
Everette Ray Kinstler, is on permanent display in the president's office.
Kinstler has achieved international acclaim for his portraits of government
officials, including at least 19 members of the U.S. cabinet.

A native of Kansas City, Mo.,
Lynn attended Stetson in the late
1930s and worked at Lynn Insurance
Group for several years following
completion of his education. He
served as a pilot instructor for the
Spartan School of Aeronautics in
Tulsa, Okla., during World War II,
and was a co-pilot and later a captain
for Trans World Airlines.
Lynn is a director of United
Missouri Bank of Kansas City and of
First Bank and Trust Co. of Boca
Raton. President of American
Reciprocal Insurance Association,
he also serves as chairman of the
board of trustees and chief executive
officer of Boca Raton Community
Hospital.
Alumni association president
Thomas R. Horton, '49, cited Lynn's
contribution to the life and
development of Stetson and his
efforts toward the betterment of the
nation and mankind during the
award presentation.
The late Doyle E. Carlton, a
former Florida governor, became a
member of Stetson's board of
trustees in 1921, serving as
chairman from 1961 until his
retirement in 1969 when the award
was established in his name.
Three other alumni received
Distinguished Alumni awards at the
annual alumni meeting at Homecoming. These included James R.
Golden, Arlington, Va.; Ralph
Hansen, Key Largo, and Joseph
Thomas Sutton, Tuscaloosa, Ala.
