STETSON UNIVERSITY, DELAND, FLORIDA January 1979 By Pope A. Duncan As alumni and friends, you should know that Stetson's 24-member Board of Trustees serves without any financial remuneration or even reimbursement for expenses. You should further know that the Board meets in regular session in September, February and May. The Board Member is normally required to come on Thursday because of committee meetings, spend the night in DeLand and join with the other members for a full board meeting on Friday. Additionally, there are sometimes special meetings of the Board, as well as committee meetings at other times. How fortunate we are at Stetson to have such a dedicated group. I wish to say a special word of appreciation to the seven who serve on the Executive Committee of the Board. This committee, consisting of the Chairman, Vice Chairman and Secretary of the Board plus four other members, elected in February each year, meets each third Friday except in those months when the entire Board meets. continued on page 2 American Studies Celebrates 25th Year A special seminar on changing American values and lifestyles, Friday, Feb. 23, will celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Stetson's American studies program. The program, established through a grant from Charles E. Merrill, has won acclaim throughout the nation as "one of the best" programs of its kind. "I think it enough to say that the Stetson program has had an impact all over the country through its students, its professors and the conferences it has run," states Allen F. Davis, former executive secretary of the American Studies Association. The silver anniversary seminar, scheduled 3-5 p.m. in the John E. continued on page 7 HOMECOMING PERFORMER • Singer-songwriter Gene Cotton is scheduled as Homecoming's guest artist for Saturday's concert. Homecoming Welcomes Alumni Homecoming '79 offers returning alumni reunions with former classmates and professors, entertainment and a chance to see "what's happening" at Stetson in a fun-filled weekend, Feb. 23-25. Edward C Furlong, '38, retiring school of business administration dean, will be the honored guest at an annual Homecoming dinner Saturday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. which features Cartha D. "Deke" DeLoach, '42, as guest speaker. DeLoach, vice president of corporate affairs for PepsiCo, Inc., retired from the FBI in 1970 following more than 28 years of service. During the last five years, he served as assistant to J. Edgar Hoover supervising all investigative and public relations activities. Appointed a special agent with the FBI following graduation from Stetson, DeLoach served in the Navy during World War II. The Claxton, Ga., native returned to the Bureau after the war as a supervisor. continued on page 6 Stetson Chancellor Marries Mrs. Martha McCormick Stetson Chancellor J. Duncan recently announced. The program, made possible by a bequest from the estate of Mr. and Mrs. Irving W. Landers of West Palm Beach, will begin September 1979 with the selection of four Landers Scholars in each freshman class. One $2,500 award and three $1,000 awards will be made each year. The Landers scholarships are renewable for four years. "We at Stetson, with our tradition of academic excellence, are grateful for the endowment of this program which will enable us to attract even more students of outstanding scholastic ability in the future," Dr. Duncan stated. "Selection will be based on academic achievement, leadership ability and evidence of strong moral character without regard to the students' financial needs." Admissions director Gary A. Meadows explained minimum standards for students applying for the scholarships include: admission to the university; a 3.5 grade point average and a strong college preparatory program in high school; Scholastic Aptitude Tests combined scores of 1,200 (verbal and mathematics) or American College Testing composite of 28; evidence of leadership experience and potential and evidence of strong moral character. Candidates are required to submit formal applications for the awards to the selection committee no later than March 1, according to Meadows. He indicated 10 finalists will be named by March 15 and will be required to visit the campus the third week in March for interviews. He said winners will be announced April 1 and must formally accept the awards by April 30. The first-place winner will receive $2,500 and other winners will receive $,1,000 each.
