VA Chief Addresses Alumni; Comedian Martin Entertains

Alumni Annual Fund Telephone Campaign, March 6-31.
Gartside, a visiting teacher for Volusia County schools, has worked
vigorously in the past four telephone
programs for the Stetson alumni annual fund, according to Jack Fortes,
annual giving director and coordinator of the telephone campaign.
, A graduate of Winter Park High
School, Gartside played baseball for
four years at Stetson. He taught physical education prior to his assignment
as a visiting teacher at Deltona Junior
High.

Veterans Administration chief Max Cleland, '64, is scheduled guest speaker
at Stetson's Homecoming 1978 dinner Friday, Feb. 10.
Alumni from all Stetson schools and colleges attend the dinner beginning
at 6 p.m. in the Carlton Union Building's cafeteria.
Cleland, a Vietnam veteran, was appointed head of the Veterans Administration last year by U. S. Pres. Jimmy Carter. Prior to the appointment, he
served the Senate veterans affairs committee as an on-site inspector of VA
hospitals. A triple amputee from a mine explosion in Vietnam, Cleland
worked for the veteran's cause as a Georgia legislator in the early 1970s. He
was appointed by then-Governor Carter to head a special commission studying the problems of Vietnam veterans returning to the state.
The alumni dinner follows receptions for individual school and college
graduates scheduled at 5 p.m.
Saturday's afternoon concert features fast-talking comedian Steve Martin,
touted as one of the rising stars in comedy.
Veteran comedian Bob Hope praised him, and The Village Voice compared him with Jerry Lewis. ". . . Both work from a premise of personal incompetence, hiding behind a barrage of props, bits and gags that achieve
higher meaning only when the performances have the liquid brilliance of
virtuosity..."
The 31-year-old comedian has appeared on NBC's "The Tonight Show" 40
times and hosted "Saturday Night" twice. He signed a contract with Paramount, and his first film, "The Absent-Minded Waiter," will be the studio's
first comedy short (eight minutes) in years. Warner Brother's produced his
first album, "Let's Get Small," which rates in Billboard's Top Ten, and has
two more cut with plans for a total of five. continued on page 2

concert features comedian Steve Martin, one of the fastest-rising performers
in show business. He's performed on college campuses, in theatres and
clubs as well as on television, including "The Tonight Show" and "NBC's
Saturday Night Live."
