STETSON UNIVERSITY, DELAND, FLORIDA March, 1978 Thomas Horton Installed as Alumni President DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI - Stetson president Dr. Pope A. Duncan, left, presented a Distinguished Alumni award to Dr. Clyde C. McCully, '49, Fresno, Calif., during the annual alumni meeting at February's Homecoming. Dr. McCully was one of five recipients of the award this year. Thomas R. Horton, '49, IBM executive, was installed as president of Stetson's Alumni Association at the annual alumni meeting held during the 58th Homecoming reunion of graduates in February. Horton will serve a two-year term. The president of the alumni group also serves as a member of the university Board of Trustees. Dr. Horton is director of university relations at IBM's corporate headquarters in Armonk, New York. He headed Stetson's alumni annual fund campaign in 1976-77 which established an all-time university record in alumni giving. Following graduation from Stetson, Horton studied at the University of Florida and-received both an M.S. and a Ph.D. from that school. He Trustee, Alumni Honored at Homecoming Stetson's two-day Homecoming celebration was highlighted Saturday morning by the presentation of a Doyle E. Carlton award to Arthur N. Morris, founder of Southern Box Co. of Baltimore, Md. and Stetson trustee. Recognition of Morris' service to Stetson as a member of the board of * trustees (since 1955), a member of the Board of Overseers of the college of law and as a member of the board of the Law Center at St. Petersburg, Inc., was given at the annual alumni meeting. Alumni association president Richard Beauchamp, '63, noted Morris' many community and philanthropic activities during the presentation. The Doyle E. Carlton Award, named for the former Florida Governor and former chairman of the Stetson * Board of Trustees, is presented annually to an outstanding individual and is not restricted to former students of the university. Five alumni received Distinguished Alumni Awards during the meeting: Cecil C. Bailey, Jacksonville; Dr. Carl M. Kuttler, Jr., St. Petersburg; Dr. Clyde C. McCully, Fresno, Calif.; Ralph Hansen. Key Largo, and W. Ret Turner, Los Angeles. Bailey, a 1927 graduate of Stetson College of Law, is a partner in the Jacksonville law firm of Rogers, Towers, Bailey and Jones. He is well- known for his civic work including: membership on the Jacksonville Library Board of Trustees (president of the governing board for 17 years), former chairmanship of the official board of the Riverside Park Methodist Church and past president of the Jacksonville Bar Association and Civic Round Table. He serves Stetson as a member of the Board of Overseers of the Stetson College of Law and as president of The Law Center Foundation at St. Petersburg, Inc. He currently serves as chairman of the board of Gulf Life Insurance Co. Dr. Kuttler, dean of administrative affairs at St. Petersburg Junior College, recently was appointed by Gov. Reubin Askew to the chairmanship of the Florida Student Financial Assistance Commission. He was also appointed to the Advisory Council on Continuing Adult Education for Florida. He serves on the Board of Overseers of the Stetson College of Law and was chairman of the building committee during the planning and construction of the addition to the Dana Law Library and the Tom Sebring Memorial Courtroom. He was recently selected as one of the Outstanding Young Men of America by the St. Petersburg Jaycees. Dr. Kuttler is a 1965 graduate of the Stetson College of Law. Dr. McCully, president of Fresno City College, graduated from Stetson in 1949 and later received a M.L.A. degree from California State College in Los Angeles and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles. He serves on numerous public and private commissions and boards including: Board of Trustees for Valley Children's Hospital of Fresno, the Commission on Accreditation of Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Colleges, Commission on Colleges for the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges and the Board of Directors of the California Community and Junior Colleges. In 1970-71, he served as chairman of the Urban Coalition of Fresno. Two recipients were not present for the award presentation. Ralph Hansen, '29, is a retired executive from Monsanto Co. A design engineer, Hansen directed the design and erection of "Monsanto's House of the Future" at Disneyland and is co-inventor of astro turf. W. Ret Turner, '50, is a theatre costume designer for movie and television personalities. He has won acclaim for designs for Andy Williams, joined IBM in 1954 and has held various executive positions with that firm since that date. Dr. Horton has served on the advisory committee of the National Scholarship Service and Fund for Negro Students and as a trustee of Bethune-Cookman College. He is also a trustee of Pace University in New York and serves as chairman of the board of trustees of the College of White Plains. He was also a vice- president of the National Council on Philanthropy. The election of Dr. Horton to a two- year term followed an amendment in the alumni association by-laws extending the term of president from one to two years. He succeeds Richard Beauchamp, '63, chief executive of Refrigerated Transport, Inc., as president of the alumni association. Tennessee Ernie Ford, Sonny and Cher. He currently is on location with the Donnie and Marie Osmond Show. Two Honorary Life Memberships in the alumni association were also presented during February's meeting. Charles and Anna Salisbury, who have generously supported the Stetson School of Music and the Summer Orchestral Music Institute, were also cited as fans of the Hatter athletic teams. Salisbury was in the general insurance and real estate business in Mount Vernon, Ohio, prior to his retirement. Mrs. Salisbury is a retired school teacher. The second Honorary Life Membership was presented to Nancye J. Landers of West Palm Beach. A native of Amherst County, Virginia, she moved to Florida in 1950. She and her husband have assisted young people in their educations and establishment of a gift annuity through Stetson. Mrs. Landers has also provided a student scholarship fund through a bequest to Stetson. Dr. Thomas R. Horton, '49, received the alumni association president's gavel from outgoing president Richard Beauchamp, '63. He is the first person elected to serve a two-year term as president of Stetson's Alumni Association.
