Two Gifts Total $550,000

Veterans Administrator
Two gifts from alumni totaling
$550,000 have been received by Stetson University, it was announced last
winter by Dr. George R. Borders, '61,
vice-president and chief administrative officer of the school.
"Both of these gifts have come from
alumni of Stetson, as expressions of
their appreciation for and confidence
in Stetson University," Dr. Borders
said. He then explained that the larger
gift was stipulated with $200,000 designated for the Business School Foundation and $300,000 unrestricted.
Edward C. Furlong, dean of the
school of business administration,
said the gift to the foundation would
produce income in support of that
school in both academic support and
scholarships.
"The business school is the fastest
growing field in the university with a
student body totaling one-third of the
total university students," Dean Furlong said. "The alumnus making this
gift also had a daughter who graduated from the business school."
"The second gift, in the amount of
$50,000, came as an unrestricted gift
to the university which gives us the
latitude to do with it what we please.
It is our hope to obtain authority from
the Board of Trustees of the university
to use it for further renovation of Flagler Hall," Dr. Borders commented.
"This gift, along with two foundation
grants received last year, will provide
enough funds to complete the second
phase of renovation of that facility."
Flagler Hall was completed and occupied in 1902 and is named in memory of Henry Flagler. The Edyth Bush
Foundation of Winter Park and the
Arthur Vining Davis Foundation of Miami were the foundations referred to
by Dr. Borders.
J. Max Cleland, '64, has been nominated by U. S. Pres. Jimmy Carter as
administrator of veterans affairs.
The Vietnam War veteran and former Georgia state senator has served
as a staff member of the U.S. Senate
Committee on Veterans Affairs.
Cleland, a triple amputee from his
service in Vietnam, was elected to
the Georgia senate in 1970 and wrote
the first legislation making public
buildings in Georgia accessible to the
handicapped. He also sponsored legislation authorizing state educational
assistance for veterans attending
school under the Gl Bill.
Then Gov. Carter appointed the
Lithonia, Ga., native to a commission
studying the problems of Vietnam veterans in the state.
While at Stetson, Cleland was a
member of Scabbard and Blade, national military honor society for senior
Reserve Officers Training Corps cadets. He volunteered for Vietnam duty
in 1967 and served with the First Air
Calvary Division for 11 months prior
to being wounded by a grenade. He
received Bronze and Silver stars.
BEN C. WILLARD RECIPIENT - The Stetson Lawyers' Association presented

Pelham Heads Trustee Board
Dr. John L. Pelham, '50, pastor of
the First Baptist Church of Palatka,
was elected chairman of Stetson's
Board of Trustees at an annual meeting of the board in February.
Elected to serve with Dr. Pelham
were: B. Frank Wheeler of Oviedo,
vice-chairman; Kenneth P. Kirchman
of Longwood, secretary; and Wendell
Jarrard, Sr., of DeLand, treasurer.
Dr. Pelham is the former president
of the Florida Baptist State Conven
tion and has served on the Stetson
Board of Trustees since 1975.
Dr. George R. Borders, vice-president and chief administrative officer
of the university, presented an annual
report to the trustees which indicated
the state of the school as excellent
and cited progress towards established goals in remodeling and maintenance of the physical facilities.
"With our strong spring registration and substantial gift income dur
ing this period, and barring any unforeseen crisis, we should finish this
fiscal year well within the budget,"
Dr. Borders reported.
Four new trustees were elected to
serve on the 24-member board: Wm.
Amory Underhill, attorney with offices
in DeLand and Washington, D.C; Dr.
Robert McMillan, pastor of the First
Baptist Church of Tallahassee; Wendell Jarrard, Jr., president of the
DeLand State Bank; and Richard
Beauchamp, president of Refrigerated Transport Co., Inc., of Atlanta
and newly-elected president of Stetson's alumni association.
The trustees approved recommendations to complete renovation of
Flagler Hall to include additional
classroom and office space for the
English Department and to expand
the computer data processing facilities of the university.
