Bailey, '27, vice-chairman of the board and general counsel of Gulf Life Insurance Co., received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the Stetson College of Law commencement in May. Bailey delivered the commencement address to the 94 grad- lates receiving J.D. degrees during the ceremonies. Eileen Murphy, Michael Keane, Don Zimmerman and David Fleming were graduated magna cum laude. Graduating cum laude were: Robert Keeley, Judith Simmons, James Hahl, Kenneth Beytin, Ron Flax-Davidson, Michael Jones, Lowell Langford, James Scarborough, Robert Schumaker, Neil Bitting, Michael Reda, Patricia Leib, Joan Fortune, Larry Price, Wayne Shipp, James Long, Austin Hoolihan, Jon Grant and Steven Selph. Dean Richard T. Dillon announced the following awards: Raphael Steinhardt Award — Jean Marie Flanagan; Judge Joe Morris Award, for demonstrating a potential for legal profession leadership — Dorothea Hecht; James Carlisle Rogers, Jr., Award, for best-written, detailed criticism of a recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court — Michael Keane; International Academy of Trial Lawyers Award, for demonstrating overall ability in trial advocacy — Robert S. Schumaker; United States Law Week Award — Linda Hochberg; Victor O. Wehle awards, for outstanding students in Trial Advocacy — John J. Shea, Jr.; Dorothea Hecht; Donald A. Smith, Jr.; Stanley Mil- ledge Award — Eileen Murphy; The Florida Bar Award, for the highest grade in Municipal Corporations — Ronald D. Trow. Nine Celebrate 50th Anniversary Stetson recognized nine alumni on the Golden Anniversary of their graduation during the 95th Commencement this May. Members of the Class of 1928 in attendance at Commencement included: Earl Graff and Mildred Stith Carr, Tampa; James William Carr, Wolfeboro, N.H.; Mamie Lou Gross Crissey, Kingsland, Ga.; Joseph Ginsberg, Daytona Beach; Mary Brown Greer, Longboat Key; and Stanley Culp, Margaret Quigley Landen- berger and Florence Larimore, DeLand. Special certificates were presented to the nine by Stetson president Pope A. Duncan. Three Honorary Degrees Conferred Stetson awarded three prominent alumni honorary doctorate degrees during the university's 95th Commencement Convocation in May. Eugene M. Lynn, prominent insurance executive of Boca Raton; O. Douglas Stenstrom, former judge and state senator of Sanford; and the Rev. J. Bryan Brasington, Baptist missionary, were honored. The presentations marked the first time in the school's history that all honorary degree recipients were former students of the school. Lynn, a native of Kansas City, Mo., is president and chief executive officer of the Lynn Insurance Group, corporate parent of eight insurance companies, reciprocals •and agencies. .He was a student at Stetson at the beginning of World War II when, he became a pilot instructor in Oklahoma. Following a three-year career as a co-pilot and later captain with Trans World Airlines, he joined the Lynn Group in 1947. A member of the advisory committee of the Stetson School of Business Administration, Lynn is a director of banks in both Florida and Missouri. He is president of the American Reciprocal Insurance Association and chairman and chief executive officer of the Boca Raton Community Hospital. He is the recipient of many awards in business, particularly in the wood and forest products industries. Stetson awarded him a Doctor of Laws degree. Stenstrom, a native of Sanford and a member of a pioneer family of that area, received a B.A. from the University of Florida and a law degree from Stetson in 1948. He was elected a Seminole County judge at the age of 26 and participated in the writing of the state's first juvenile court act, which reformed Florida's laws and procedures for dealing with children. . He was elected to the Florida Senate in 1954. Stenstrom served on the Board of Governors of the Florida Bar and was named by Gov. Reubin Askew as the first permanent chairman of the Florida Board of Independent Colleges and Universities. Stenstrom has served as general counsel of Stetson, and was the first Stetson alumnus to serve as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Stetson. He has served his Baptist church as a deacon and teacher for 25 years. He also received a Doctor of Laws degree. Rev. Brasington, currently secretary for Western South America for the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board, served more than 20 years as a Southern Baptist missionary to South America prior to his present appointment, continued on page 8 215700 Seniors Receive Sullivan Awards Kathleen McConnell, Lakeland, anc Victor MicKunas, St. Petersburg, were honored with Algernon Sydney Sullivar awards presented annually to two graduating seniors of Stetson. The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Aware is given by the New York Southern Society and Stetson to the students whose personal example and influence throughout the campus best exemplifies the finest spiritual qualities of humanity and high character. Miss McConnell was recognized foi her service on the Judiciary Council, the Stetson Union Board, the residence hal staff, Phi Chi Theta, Mortar Board anc Delta Delta Delta, a social sorority. She was co-chairman of the 1977 Orientation Committee and was selected for Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges. MicKunas is a member of the honors program, Phi Society, Scroll and Key ODK, Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges and was heac resident of Honors House. He is also a member of two physical science honor societies, Gamma Sigma Epsilon in chemistry and Beta Beta Beta in biology, of which he is president. He has also done volunteer service at the Duval Home in Glenwood.
