Convocation Opens
94th Academic Year
Stetson opened its ninety-fourth academic year Sept. 9 with a traditional
Convocation service. Dr. George
Borders, vice-president and chief administrative officer at the university,
presided.
Following the invocation, Dr. Borders officially opened the year with a
Jjrief address, expressing "joy, hope
and optimism" for the upcoming
school session.
Two William Hugh McEniry award
recipients, Kathleen Johnson, '30,
and Dr. Marc Lovelace, were keynote
speakers. The McEniry award is a
yearly honor given to a faculty member selected as superior in teaching
excellence by members of the faculty
and student body. Mrs. Johnson,
associate professor of English, received the award in 1976, Dr. Lovelace, professor of history, in 1975.
Mrs. Johnson welcomed students
and faculty to a new year warning
against defeatism as a solution to the
world's problems.
Dr. Lovelace emphasized the
meaning of "convocation," which he
defined as a "calling together" in order to learn how to communicate and
interact. He urged further commitment to the goal of continuing Stetson's academic excellence.
Nine presidential scholars were
recognized by Dr. Borders during the
Convocation services. All presidential scholars have maintained a 3.0
grade point average throughout their
academic careers at Stetson, with no
grade lower than an A. Each scholar
received a $100 check.

Beach; Brian Biddinger, West Palm
Beach; Peter Brockway, Huntington,
N. Y.; Kirk Davis, Olean, N. Y.; Linda
Harkness, Laurel, Md.; Susan Par-

SEPTEMBER CONVOCATION - Dr. George R. Borders, vice-president and
chief administrative officer at Stetson, welcomed new and returning students
to the ninety-fourth academic year of Florida's oldest institution of higher
learning during Convocation Sept. 9 in the Forest of Arden. A procession of
faculty in academic regalia and Stetson's Concert Choir added tradition to
the mid-morning program.
Turner Appointed
Dean of Students
Etter M. Turner, '35, has been appointed dean of students at Stetson,
according to an announcement by
Dr. George R. Borders, chief administrative officer for the university.
Dean Turner was associate dean of
students prior to her new appointment. She served as dean of women
from 1941 to 1973 when the offices of
men's and women's student deans
were combined. She had joined Stetson's faculty in 1936 as an assistant
professor of religion.
"We are very grateful that Dean
Turner has agreed to assume these
broadened responsibilities during
this period in the history of our university," Dr. Borders said. "She enjoys the respect and admiration of
both faculty and students."
The dean is a past president of the
Florida Association of Women Deans
and Counselors and is a member of
the National Association of Student
Personnel Administrators and the National Association of Women Deans
and Counselors.
She serves on the board of the
Spaceport Area TB and Respiratory
Diseases Association and is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma (education), Phi Chi Theta (business
women) and Sigma Pi Kappa (journalism) honorary fraternities.
Athletes Sought
For Nomination
To Sports Hall
Stetson's Sports Hall of Fame committee established 1976 as the final
year graduates prior to 1940 may be
honored by selection to the Hall.
The committee seeks nominations
of athletes based on three criteria:
candidates graduated prior to 1940;
they established a record of outstanding performance in sports at the university, with attention also given to
activities following graduation; athletes nominated reflect sound moral
character consistent with Stetson's
expressed objectives.
Persons submitting nominations
are requested to provide detailed information about their candidates,
including: years of attendance at
Stetson; sports participated in; outstanding honors received in athletics;
post-graduation achievements.
