EIGHTY-SEVEN RECEIVE
DEGREES IN AUGUST
Dr. Theodore W. Beiler challenged
graduates of Stetson University Friday
evening in Commencement exercises
held in Elizabeth Hall auditorium.
"Has Stetson helped you see beyond
the narrow confines of your major
interest? Has "liberal" education
succeeded in liberating you from
narrow perspectives?" Dr. Beiler
questioned the eighty-seven graduates.
"Has your time here helped you to find
what your values are and to find what
is worthy of your attention!' he asked.
"Does God have a plan for your life?"
Dr. Beiler commented that most of
the graduates had taken four years to
reach the platform whereas "it has
taken me twenty years!' The reference
was to the fact that Dr. Beiler joined the
Stetson faculty in 1953 as an assistant
professor. He is now a full professor
and chairman of the department
of Chemistry.
Fifty-six candidates received
Master's degrees and thirty-one
bachelor's degrees from the College of
Liberal Arts and School of Business
Administration.
Dr. Robert S. Chauvin, dean of the
College of Liberal Arts and director
of the Summer School session presided
at the Commencement.
Dr. T. Wayne Bailey, professor of
Political Science, delivered the
Invocation and Benediction. Paul R.
Jenkins, Jr., Organist, played both the
Processional and Recessional.
Referring to the Commencement as
a celebration, Dr. Beiler stressed the
continuing need for education and the
endlessness of the learning process.
Citing changes in social and
environmental conditions, he
speculated on possible future postures
of education and society.

HEAD ALUMNI
HOMECOMING FETE
Ken Kirchman, class of '58, is serving
as chairman of the Special Projects
Committee for the Alumni Association.
The primary project of this committee
is to help set up and implement plans
for Homecoming 1974.
Ken is president and 80 percent
owner of Florida Software Services, Inc.,
an Altamonte Springs company
transplanted from Orlando. In the
computer field, software refers to the
Monday, August 27. The new Health & Physical Education Building begins to
take shape. Maybe in six or eight months it will be complete.

systems or instructions given a
computer to make it function, while
hardware refers to the actual computer.
Ken's company is the largest
software supplier to' banks in the
country.
Ken has displayed the same enthusiasm
toward making this homecoming a
success as can be evidenced in the
success of his company.
During the past summer, Ken has
been working closely with the Director
of Alumni Affairs at Stetson and
student homecoming host and hostess
for 1974, Mike Fronk and Briony Aaron.
The Special Projects Committee has
set a goal to bring back 2,000 alumni to
the Stetson campus for homecoming.
He has asked the alumni in the
district in which the University is
located, that includes the counties of
Volusia, Putnam, St. Johns, and
Flagler, to serve as the district host
for the occasion.
Ken says, "I am confident that we
will not only reach our goal of having
more alumni return to homecoming
than ever before, but we can also assure
those returning that they will have
more fun participating in the various
activities and leave the campus more
fulfilled than ever before in our
University's history."
At present.Ken is looking for
volunteers to serve on the various
subcommittees that will help set up
and implement the activities planned.

MAX LERNER
ORIENTATION SPEAKER
Max Lerner, nationally known
journalist and educator, will speak
on September 4th at 8:00 p.m. under
the sponsorship of Orientation Week
Committee.
Lerner's newspaper column is
syndicated world-wide through the
Los Angeles Times Syndicate. He has
traveled in almost every part of the
world as a journalist and a scholar. His
column is carried three times weekly.
He is the author of a dozen books, of
which the best known is probably
America As A Civilization. It has been
translated and published throughout
the world, has received wide acclaim,
and is available in a two-volume
paperback edition published by Simon
and Schuster. His latest published
work is "Tocqueville and American
Civilization."
Lerner did his college and law
studies at Yale University and graduate
"There is a new world coming"...
that is for freshmen and transfer
students participating in Stetson
University's 91st Annual Orientation
Week beginning on the DeLand campus
September 2,1973.
Convocation Ceremonies will
officially open the school year at 10:00
a.m. Thursday (September 6) in the
Forest of Arden, with classes beginning
at 11:00 a.m.
Stetson's Orientation Week is geared
towards introducing the new students
to both Stetson's academic and social
standards as well as the people and
buildings which comprise the Stetson
community.
Students are kept busy during the
week as they settle into their
dormitories, undergo testing, attend
social event, and meet with deans,
staff members, and students.
Residence halls open Sunday at
8:00 a.m. and Orientation activities
begin that afternoon. A reception
honoring the parents is scheduled for
1:30 Sunday afternoon in the lounge of
the Carlton Student Union Building.
The general meeting of all new
students, the official kick-off for the
week, will be held at 4:30 p.m. in
Elizabeth Hall Auditorium.
Students are scheduled to meet with
their academic deans (7:00 p.m.) and
student academic advisors (8:00). These
meetings will be followed by
a pool party.
Monday morning students will begin
a three day testing period during which
they take placement and
exemption exams.
Stetson President John E. Johns and
Mrs. Johns will give a reception for
Stetson students Monday (September 3)
at 7:00 p.m. The students will have the
opportunity to attend a social at the
"Cellar Door" where Stetson students
perform late that night.
