Plenty of campus changes
Returning students this fall will find some
parts of campus looking different (bettet), and
some parts temporarily less convenient, due
to renovations.
The Carson-Hollis Hall corner of Amelia
Avenue has been transformed (see photo)
with landscaping, curving sidewalks, and
brick walks. It's a sample of what all of
Amelia will look like in the futute, said
Physical Plant Ditector Dudley Howe.
Other major projects to be completed this
summer: Elizabeth Hall Chapel ceiling has
been replastered and painted, and the Chapel
lighting, sound system, and acoustics have
been improved; a new fire detection system
has been installed in Hollis-Carson and the
Emily system rebuilt; Allen Hall has been
centrally air conditioned; interiors of Stetson
Hall and Conrad have been repainted; and
cottidors and doors are being redone, and new
corridor and lounge carpet installed in Gordis
and Smith Halls. An annex behind Gillespie
Museum of Minerals has been renovated for
a new geology lab. Three new faculty offices
have been built in Elizabeth Hall and fout in
Davis Hall. The weight room, social hall, and
kitchen in Carson-Hollis have been reconstructed ("It's a knockout," Howe said.)
A new maple floor is being installed for the
varsity basketball coutt at Edmunds Center,
and the movable seating is being rebuilt and
new drivers installed. Edmunds can't be used
until Oct. 15. To prevent some scheduling

during Parents Weekend, Oct. 26-28.
Mark your calendar now, and watch for
schedule details in early fall.
During a busy Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday, you can sample some classes, catch
up on the year with President Lee and Provost
Brakeman, meet the President's Parents
Council and other Stetson parents, spend
some time with your student, attend chapel in
Elizabeth Hall, and much mote.
If you have been before, come again, and
encourage others to join you. If this will be
your first time, expect a full but interesting
. , weekend. Join the fun!

problems, Cummings Gym's floor has been
refinished. Students should watch for notice
of location changes for some fall events.
Emergency phones have been installed
around campus in attractive boxes, and the
next phase of the lighting project will get
undetway in the fall. A new theatrical lighting
system will be installed in Stover Theatre
this fall.
Stetson is negotiating for purchase of the
Empire Bank building at Woodland and
Michigan; no decision had been teached by
late July. A general architect has been
retained for the expansion of Carlton
Student Union Building.
Dean Beasley
Dr. James Beasley named interim dean of student affairs
Dt. James R. Beasley, associate professor of
religion, has been appointed interim dean of
students affairs for 1990-91.
He is a faculty member with extensive experience working with students, churches,
schools, and community advisory boards. Dr.
Beasley will lead the Office of Student
Affairs while the university conducts a
national search for a permanent replacement
for Dr. Garth Jenkins, who served Stetson
with distinction from 1978-1990, President Lee
said.
Dr. Beasley chairs the student development
section of the university's Southern Associa
tion of Colleges and Schools self study
committee. A member of the faculty since
1973, he is a former chair of the Faculty
Senate. He earned a doctor of philosophy
degree in history at Tufts University and a
master of arts degree in church history from
Andover Newton Theological School. He
received master's and bachelor's degrees in
religion from Stetson.
He is chair of the Citizens' Advisory
Committee of DeLand High School and
served on the advisory committee for the
Volusia County School Board and on the High
School Task Force.
