1950 Hatters
Sports lovers among the Stetson
family and friends of the University
are enthused ober the 1950 Hatter
Eleven.
The Green and White, under three
new- coaches, gave an outstanding
performance in a practice game
against the University of Miami. It
is hoped that a regular game can be
scheduled with the Hurricanes. The
Hatters then were victorious over
Troy, Wofford, Jax NAS and Milligan
before dropping a game to Tampa.
Of the Miami game, Arnold Finne-
frock, sports editor of the Florida
Times-Union, said: "The exhibition
given by the Stetson outfit against a
team that plays in big league circles
was most creditable and should be encouraging to the followers of the Hatters."
J. T. Collier, of the DeLand Sun
News said: "Stetson outplayed the
Hurricanes in the third quarter and
kept the highly-touted team on the defensive and in their own territory."
Bernard Kahn, of the Daytona
Beach News Journal said: "Coach
Joe McMullen's minor leaguers gave
a surprisingly good account of themselves in view of the fact that they
were not expectd to give Miami more
than a workout."
Charlie Wadsworth, of the Orlando
Sentinel-Star, said: "Andy Gustafson
. . . admits his pass defense will he
weaker, but remember Miami had the
nation's top pass defense last year.
Stetson demonstrated this yesterday
. . . The Hatters . . . did the majority
of the gaming through the air."
Of the new Hatter coaching staff,
Finnefrock said: "The Fanner thinks
Stetson!tes in particular and Central
Floridians in general will like McMullen, a young man who in engagingly frank and amiable. He, Jay

Fall Term Opens
With A Bang
The fall quarter at John B. Stetson
University is off with a bang!
After a period of orientation for the
new faculty members and a week's
testing and registering for freshmen,
transfers and returning students,
classes started September 25.
While enrollment is still incomplete,
it is estimated that the total number
of students this year will be above
1,500.
Several new courses are being offered. An entire new department, the
Reserve Officers Training Corps, enrolled its first cadets, for the fall term.
The unit has a quota of 190 deferments. A closer relationship between
the University and its radio station,
WJBS has been perfected.
A new dean of the University and a
new business manager assumed their
duties this year to relieve President J.
Ollie Edmunds of many duties he has
carried in addition to his many other
duties. This will permit him to spend
more time in the field with the alumni.
The new dean is Dr. Charles Howard Hopkins, historian and authority
in the field of Christian ethics, who
earned his doctor of philosophy degree at Yale University. For the last
two years, the new dean has been

Senator J. B. Rcdgers, Jr., president
of the John B. Stetson University
Alumni Association, is achieving his
goal in accelerating the activities of
alumni chapters throughout the state.
The Association is proud of his accomplishments, and the University is
deeply appreciative of the time,
energy, and enthusiasm which he has
devoted to the development program
for his alma mater.
Senator Rogers addressed the Central Florida Alumni Chapter in Orlando at a general alumni meeting on
September 8. He described the work
of the association, which is stimulating the interest of all former Stetson
students in perpetuating a living link
with our alma mater, our classmates,
and our college friends, and in turn
is helping John B. Stetson University
to maintain its place in higher education in Florida.

Plans for the biggest homecoming
in the history of Stetson University
are in the making.

Land, committees are putting the finishing touches on plans to welcome
back a record number of old grads.
